The game borrows prominent landmarks and regional names, then compresses and rearranges them to create a compact, playable Commonwealth. You can use it to spot real-world inspirations—not to navigate Boston by game map.
Fallout 4’s Commonwealth is bigger than Boston
The game’s setting is the Commonwealth, a fictionalized version of Massachusetts rather than Boston alone. Its recognizable place names reach beyond the city to Concord, Lexington, Cambridge and Salem, among others. Xbox Wire’s 2015 tour of the wasteland describes the Commonwealth as including all of present-day Massachusetts; that is a description of the game’s setting, not a claim that the map reproduces the state’s real geography.

Think of the map as a regional collage: landmarks and place names evoke real Massachusetts, while their game-world relationships are adapted for exploration.
Which Boston landmarks are easy to recognize?
Fenway Park becomes Diamond City
Diamond City is built into the ruins of Fenway Park, one of the game’s clearest real-world correspondences. Xbox Wire points to the recognizable Green Monster and light towers. The stadium’s identity carries through even though its purpose and condition have changed: in the game, it is a fortified settlement.

Old North Church and the historic core
Old North Church appears as a destination in the game, as do Boston Common and the Massachusetts State House. The church’s place in the city’s Revolutionary history is also part of its real-world identity. The National Park Service’s Boston National Historical Park map marks Old North Church, the Common and the State House, helping show how these sites sit within Boston’s real historic core.
Cambridge, MIT and the Institute
Fallout 4 draws on Cambridge and MIT as real-world references for the fictional Institute. The resemblance is thematic and geographic shorthand, not a reproduction of the full city or campus. Tech Times’ 2015 comparison also notes a square in the game that evokes Harvard Square, illustrating how the game blends recognizable Cambridge references with its own layout.

Salem and the Museum of Witchcraft
The game includes Salem and a Salem Museum of Witchcraft whose building is described by Tech Times as closely resembling the real Salem Witch Museum. The name and visual echo help identify the inspiration, but the in-game town is much smaller than real Salem.
Faneuil Hall and the Combat Zone
Faneuil Hall is represented in the game, but Tech Times observes that Fallout 4 reduces it to a single building rather than the larger area many people mean when they refer to Faneuil Hall. The same comparison points to a visual resemblance between the game’s Combat Zone location and Boston’s Orpheum Theatre; treat that as a reported comparison, not a surveyed architectural match.

Where the game changes Boston’s scale and layout
Fallout 4’s map compresses real places so that a broader range of destinations can fit into a traversable game world. Tech Times reports that Boston Common and the Public Garden are squeezed into a much smaller combined space, and that towns such as Malden and Salem are substantially downsized. These are qualitative comparisons, not a measured conversion between game distances and real miles.
The skyline and building lineup also differ. Some buildings are missing or difficult to recognize, while others have been changed to serve the game’s fictional setting. A recognizable landmark therefore tells you what inspired a location more reliably than it tells you where every nearby street or building would be.

Why the USS Constitution is an especially striking example
The real USS Constitution is at the Charlestown Navy Yard, a location shown on the NPS map. In Fallout 4, the ship appears in a dramatically altered, elevated position. Xbox Wire notes that the game changes its anchoring context, and Tech Times calls attention to the unusual placement. The ship remains identifiable, but its in-game setting is an adaptation rather than a guide to its real location.

If you want to understand where the inspirations sit in real Boston, use a real-world map rather than trying to infer routes from the game.
