Stranger Things connects to Dungeons & Dragons in two ways: the characters play it and borrow its monsters and terminology to make sense of the supernatural, while the game also serves as a storytelling device and a symbol of childhood. The series is not presented as a literal D&D campaign.
How D&D works inside the story
The boys’ D&D games establish a shared hobby rooted in imagination, and help show the bond between them. When they encounter frightening events, they reach for familiar game language and creatures to describe what they are facing. Those names—including Vecna—are the characters’ frame of reference; they do not mean the supernatural events are actually happening as part of a game. Netflix’s interview with the Duffer Brothers discusses the show’s use of D&D and its references.

Why the creators chose D&D
For Matt Duffer, role-playing was a particular reason to use D&D in the story. He told Netflix, “We particularly wanted to use Dungeons & Dragons [since] it is so much more immersive than any other game because of the role-playing element.” The game lets the characters imagine, name, and discuss threats together, making it part of how the show tells its story—not simply a nostalgic detail.
How the finale brings the game full circle
The D&D scenes bookend the series. The story opens with the boys playing, and in the finale the older group completes one last campaign in the Wheelers’ basement. Ross Duffer said the scene was planned to echo the opening and described it as “about this group of characters saying goodbye to their childhood.” He also framed the younger children taking up the game as a handoff: “It is their time to leave it behind and pass the torch to the next group of kids.” Netflix’s January 2, 2026 finale interview explains the scene’s significance.
