Yahoo Fantasy Football is a season-long game in which you draft NFL players, set an active lineup, and earn fantasy points from those players’ real-life performances. You compete under the rules of a league, so its scoring, roster slots, matchup format, and transaction rules determine the details.
How the game works
- Join or create a league. A league is the group of managers competing under shared rules. Public leagues use Yahoo’s default settings; private leagues are invitation-based or created by a manager, and a commissioner can define key settings and membership. Yahoo also offers keeper leagues, renewed private leagues that allow players to be retained, and prize leagues with entry fees and eligibility terms. Review Yahoo’s current rules before joining a prize league. Yahoo’s league overview explains the league types.
- Check the format and rules. Yahoo describes head-to-head leagues, where you face another manager each week; points-only leagues, where the competition is based on accumulated points; and Death format, where the lowest-scoring team is eliminated each week. Your league’s scoring and roster settings govern how points and positions work.
- Draft your team. The draft fills your roster with NFL players. Yahoo supports live standard drafts, live salary-cap drafts, autopick, and offline drafts for private leagues. In a standard draft, managers take turns selecting players; in a salary-cap draft, managers bid from a budget. Autopick uses rankings to fill a roster. An offline draft takes place outside Yahoo’s draft room, and the commissioner enters the results afterward. Yahoo recommends setting pre-draft rankings in case you miss a pick; mock drafts are also available for practice. See Yahoo’s drafting overview.
- Set your active lineup. Move eligible players into the active slots for each matchup. Only active players earn points; bench players do not score for that matchup. Position slots and lineup rules vary by league, so check your roster settings.
- Manage your roster during the season. Add or drop players, adjust your lineup, and make trades as allowed by league rules. Roster space and transaction limits can constrain moves. In leagues using waivers, a dropped player is temporarily frozen; managers can submit claims, and a priority system determines who gets the player if multiple managers claim them. Yahoo’s guide to playing Fantasy Football covers roster management and waivers.
- Track matchups and standings. The League tab provides access to weekly matchups, standings, opponents’ starting lineups, league settings, and league chat. Playoff seeding and tiebreakers are governed by league rules. Yahoo says public and public-prize leagues use “higher seed wins” as the default playoff tiebreaker; private-league commissioners can select from available options before playoffs begin. Details are in Yahoo’s playoff tiebreaker guide.
How fantasy points are scored
Your team’s points come from the real-life performance of players in active lineup slots. The scoring categories and values are not identical in every league: private-league commissioners can customize scoring, and Yahoo’s examples include yardage bonuses and defense/special-teams scoring details. To see the rules that apply to your team, open your league’s Scoring & Settings. Yahoo’s scoring FAQ explains how categories and plays are interpreted.

|---|---|---|

| Draft method | Live standard, salary-cap, autopick, or offline | Changes how players are allocated and how you need to prepare. Yahoo drafting overview. |
| In-season rules | Roster slots, waivers, transaction limits, trades, and playoff tiebreakers | Shapes lineup decisions and access to available players. Check your league settings and Yahoo’s commissioner settings guide. |
