Civilization VII divides a full campaign into three historical chapters: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. The key current-version change is that Firaxis’s May 19, 2026 Test of Time Update 1.4.0 adds an option to remain as one civilization throughout the campaign and replaces Legacy Paths with Triumphs. Older guides describe the original system, not necessarily the current transition mechanics.
What are the three Ages?
Each Age is a playable chapter, not just a label for a period on the timeline. The three are Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. As the campaign advances, the available civilizations, resources, territory, and gameplay systems change. Firaxis’s January 2025 support overview describes the Ages as distinct chapters; the original design diary explains how those chapters changed play.
What happens when a new Age begins?
In the original design, all players transitioned to the next Age at the same time. The world changed, and players selected a civilization for the next chapter. The available choices could reflect historical or geographic connections, leader-specific unlocks, or actions taken during the campaign that opened less historical options. Players also selected eligible Legacy benefits to carry forward.
The transition was meant to change the strategic situation, not simply advance the date. Ed Beach’s developer diary describes crises near the end of an Age, followed by changes such as refreshed Civics and Technology trees, new resources, an expanded world, and Age-specific systems. For example, the original design gave ocean-crossing exploration and Religion a greater role in the Exploration Age. These are descriptions of the original design; the available official material does not establish every corresponding detail in the post-1.4.0 game.

Do you have to change civilizations?
No. The Test of Time Update 1.4.0 announcement says the update adds an option to play as one civilization through the campaign. That is a change from the original design, in which players chose a civilization for each successive Age. The announcement does not specify the option’s exact settings or how civilization continuity affects every other transition mechanic, so check the current in-game guide or accessible 1.4.0 documentation for those details.
What replaced Legacy Paths?
Triumphs replaced Legacy Paths in Update 1.4.0. In the original system, players mainly earned Legacy points by completing Legacy Path milestones and spent those points at transitions on carryover benefits; some choices cost more or required particular achievements. Those details explain how the earlier version worked, but they should not be used as a guide to current Triumph goals or rewards. Firaxis’s Test of Time Update 1.4.0 announcement confirms the replacement, but its linked detailed notes and updated guide are needed to verify Triumph objectives, rewards, and transition procedures.

What is confirmed about the current system?
Firaxis community representative announced on May 19, 2026 that Test of Time Update 1.4.0 was rolling out to all platforms. The announcement identifies three major changes: the option to keep one civilization throughout the campaign, Triumphs replacing Legacy Paths, and a rework of Victories. It recommends beginning a new campaign because of the scale of the changes. The announcement establishes that the framework changed, but not the precise operating rules for Triumphs, rewards, or Age transitions.
| Question | Original design | What Update 1.4.0 confirms |
|---|---|---|
| Can you keep one civilization? | Players chose a civilization for the next Age. | An option to play as one civilization through the campaign; exact settings are not stated in the announcement. |
| What are the between-Age objectives? | Legacy Paths supplied milestones and Legacy points. | Triumphs replace Legacy Paths; specific goals and rewards are not stated in the announcement. |
| How are rewards carried forward? | Players selected eligible Legacy benefits using earned points. | Current reward and carryover rules are not stated in the announcement. |
| When and how does a transition happen? | Players transitioned together at the end of an Age. | Current trigger and transition procedure are not stated in the announcement. |
| What changes in the world and systems? | The original diary describes changes to the world, resources, trees, and Age-specific systems. | Exact post-update changes are not stated in the announcement. |
Why older guides may differ
The original transition system was configurable in later pre-1.4.0 updates. Official July 2025 patch notes added an end-of-Age countdown to Advanced Start settings, with a 10-turn default and options for 20 turns or no countdown. They also documented a choice between Continuity and Regroup transition methods. Because those settings predate Update 1.4.0, verify their names and availability in the current build before relying on an older menu walkthrough.
