Slow-moving zombies gave players time to plan, while stationary plants made the opposing side instantly legible—and the absurd matchup gave the strategy its comic personality. The original Plants vs. Zombies launched in 2009; the “a decade ago” in the original anniversary framing refers to 2019.
Why make tower defense fit on one screen?
Fan wanted players to focus on choosing and placing defenses, not navigating a sprawling map. He recalled asking, “Can I make a game, a tower defense game, that just plays on one single screen? That was the goal.” A single-screen lawn meant no scrolling and no mini-map to consult. In Fan’s view, larger maps brought extra navigation and interface complexity that distracted from the tactical choice at the center of tower defense. This was his design rationale, not a claim that every larger-map game has the same problem. GamesBeat’s 2019 interview with Fan.
Was Plants vs. Zombies originally Plants vs. Aliens?
Aliens were among the early attackers, carried over from ideas associated with Fan’s earlier fish-tank game concept. But he wanted enemies whose movement players could read immediately. “I needed an enemy that people would just look at and immediately realize, ‘That’s a slow enemy,’” he told GamesBeat. Zombies made that threat clear: they advanced slowly, giving players time to recognize danger and build a defense. Fan’s earlier work on a Java fish-tank game became Insaniquarium; he later described how that project brought him into contact with PopCap. PC Gamer’s 2010 interview recounts that earlier path.
Why plants?
Once the attackers were slow-moving zombies, stationary defenders made an intuitive counterpoint. Fan put it simply: “What’s something that everyone knows doesn’t move? Plants.” The matchup is more than a comic premise: the still defenders and steadily advancing enemies make the tactical problem easy to parse at a glance. Pea-shooters fighting the undead then turn that clear setup into a source of humor. Fan’s GamesBeat interview.

How long did the game take to make?
Fan said development took three and a half years. He also recalled that the game could have shipped about a year earlier, but the team spent that additional period polishing and tuning the game and adding modes. His account distinguishes the point when the game was substantially complete from the later work; it does not mean three and a half years of uninterrupted feature production. GamesBeat’s interview, page 3.
Who helped create Plants vs. Zombies?
Fan described the core as four people: himself, composer Laura Shigihara, programmer Tod Semple, and artist Rich Werner. He also stressed that others contributed. In a 2023 AMA, he named Steven Notley, who wrote the Almanac descriptions; Enrique Corts, who made five lawn backgrounds before Werner became the main artist; and Matt Holmberg, who helped with UI art. Calling Fan the sole developer—or the four the only contributors—would leave out work he explicitly credited. Fan’s 2023 AMA.

How did the singing sunflower become part of the launch story?
Fan recalled that the end credits featured a singing sunflower and a zombie dance party. The team developed the song and choreographed the sequence; PopCap’s marketing team saw promotional potential. Fan said the video went out on April 1 during the 2009 launch period, prompting some audiences to wonder whether PopCap was really making a zombie game. He also credited the iOS and early iPad releases with bringing the game to many more players. Those are Fan’s recollections of the launch, not a quantified account of what caused the game’s success. After the original succeeded, PopCap asked Fan to lead a sequel. He declined because he felt he had made the game he wanted to make and was more interested in creating a new intellectual property. That did not mean he had no contact with the sequel team: Fan said he gave early advice about preserving the accessibility and qualities that had worked in the first game. He was not officially on the sequel team. GamesBeat’s interview, page 3.
