Exploding Kittens became a Netflix show by expanding the card game into a shared franchise—not by turning its rules into a television plot. Netflix announced an exclusive mobile game and an adult animated series together on 18 April 2022. The series, initially planned for 2023, arrived in 2024 as a nine-episode comedy about God and the Devil living on Earth as cats.
Netflix announced a game and show as one franchise move
On 18 April 2022, Netflix announced an exclusive mobile version of Exploding Kittens alongside an adult animated comedy series, describing the pairing as the first time it had launched a mobile game and television series from the same franchise. The announced show premise put God and the Devil on Earth in the bodies of house cats. Netflix’s announcement also described the mobile game as available to members without extra fees or in-app purchases; those were the terms of the 2022 offer, not a statement of current availability or pricing.
The mobile game kept the physical game’s draw-and-avoid structure and added two exclusive cards. Radar revealed the location of the nearest Exploding Kitten in the deck; Flip Flop reversed the order of the cards. Netflix said series-inspired cards and mechanics would be added later.
Why the show tells a new story instead of adapting the rules
The card game supplies a simple engine for tension: players draw cards while trying to avoid drawing an Exploding Kitten. That creates suspense and comic reversals, but not the sustained plot and character arcs a television series needs.
#1 Best Overall
- In this family card game, draw cards and try to avoid the dreaded Exploding Kitten! Use strategic action cards to skip your turn, shuffle the deck, or defuse the Kitten with laser pointers or catnip sandwiches. The last player standing wins!
- Designed for 2-5 players, ages 7 and up, Exploding Kittens is great for kids, teens, and adults alike. Whether you’re a seasoned gamer or want a casual game to break the ice, this easy-to-learn game is perfect for bringing everyone together.
- Compact for travel, portable for on-the-go, camping, game nights, road trips or a family home evening.
- Includes 56 cards illustrated by The Oatmeal (each featuring a hilarious cartoon with characters such as Tacocat, Rainbow-Ralphing Cat and All-Seeing Goat Wizard) and an instruction manual (that you’ll probably skim).
- Our Story: One of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns ever, the hilarious characters, thoughtful design and gameplay simple enough for a good time but complex enough for ultimate replayability, Exploding Kittens has taken the world by storm, with millions of copies sold and a global fanbase.
Matthew Inman, co-creator of the game and a showrunner on the series, put the distinction plainly: “When I came up with the idea for this show, I abandoned any hope of trying to turn the card game itself directly into a series.” He said the game did not have a cohesive story, so the series built its own around God and the Devil sent to Earth as neighboring house cats. Netflix Tudum’s July 2024 feature says the show includes franchise references and Easter eggs for existing fans, while remaining understandable to viewers who have not played the game.
| Format | What drives it | What carries across |
|---|---|---|
| Card game | Drawing cards and avoiding an Exploding Kitten. | The explosive-cat premise and irreverent comic tone. |
| Animated series | A continuing conflict between God and the Devil as cats, alongside the dysfunctional human family God joins. | Franchise identity, tone, and references—not the sequence of play or events from a particular game. |
The adaptation therefore uses the game as a springboard rather than a script. A recognizable premise and humor link the formats, while the show’s Godcat–Devilcat conflict and human family provide the ongoing story.

The series release and episode count
The show did not arrive in its announced 2023 window. Netflix’s 12 July 2024 release-day feature says it was streaming, and the official title page lists nine episodes for the 2024 series. Netflix’s title page identifies it as an adult animated comedy.
Who made the show
Netflix credits Matthew Inman and Shane Kosakowski as creators and showrunners. Inman is also a co-creator of the card game. Elan Lee, a franchise creator, is among the executive producers.

What the published sales figures say
Netflix materials give dated snapshots rather than a current 2026 sales total. Its 18 April 2022 announcement described Exploding Kittens as having sold more than 18 million games; the July 2024 Tudum feature said more than 35 million copies had been sold. Both figures should be read with their publication dates, not treated as a fresh count.

Do you need to play the card game first?
No. Netflix says viewers do not need to know the game to understand the series. Playing can make the references and the adaptation’s starting point more familiar, but the show’s story stands on its own. If you want to see the game the series grew from, look for the Exploding Kittens card game; a purchase is not a prerequisite for watching.
