Minecraft saves a single-player world on the device running it, but the file format and access options depend on the edition and platform. Java Edition uses Anvil; Bedrock Edition uses LevelDB. A world hosted on Realms is stored remotely and has its own backup system. None of those facts means every local world is automatically backed up to the cloud.
Where are Minecraft worlds saved?
A local world is saved with the Minecraft installation on the device where you play it. The exact location and whether you can browse the files depend on the edition, platform, and storage settings. There is no single path that applies to every Minecraft world.
Java and Bedrock use different formats
Microsoft’s [world-format comparison] identifies LevelDB as Bedrock’s storage format and Anvil as Java Edition’s. These are internal formats, not interchangeable save-file types; most players do not need to open or edit them to play or make a backup.
Android Bedrock storage
Minecraft Help documents this Android location when the game’s File Storage Location is set to External: Android/data/com.mojang.minecraftpe/files/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds. From there, the documented method is to copy the whole minecraftWorlds folder or an individual world folder. If File Storage Location is Application, Help directs players to its Realms transfer instructions instead. See Minecraft Help’s storage instructions.

Are Minecraft worlds saved to the cloud?
Not necessarily. A local save, an Xbox cloud-synced save, and a Minecraft Realm are different arrangements. Xbox status can indicate that a world is cloud-synced, cloud-only, or local-only. Minecraft Help notes that a world that has not been played remains on the device until it is backed up; it also describes uploading a local-only world through Settings > Storage > Manage Worlds. Realms worlds are hosted remotely and use a separate automatic backup process. Minecraft Help says a Realm saves progress every 30 minutes, when a player chooses Save & Quit, and when a player disconnects. This applies to Realms, not to every local world. Realm backup details.

How do I back up or transfer a Minecraft world?
The right method depends on where the world is stored. A manually exported or copied file gives you a separate copy; downloading a Realm world creates a local copy. Before relying on any backup, confirm that the copy exists in the intended destination and, where possible, that Minecraft can open it.
Bedrock on Windows
- Open the world’s edit screen.
- Under file management, choose Export World.
- Select where to save the exported file.
The labels and screen layout may vary by game version. Consult the current Minecraft Help instructions for the interface in your version.

Bedrock on Android
When File Storage Location is External, copy the minecraftWorlds folder—or just the folder for the world you want—from the documented Android path to a computer or another suitable destination. Application storage uses a different transfer route; Minecraft Help points players to its Realms instructions for that case.
Java Realms
To make a local copy of a Realm world, use Minecraft Realms > Configure > World Backups > Download Latest. Minecraft Help says the downloaded world is added to your single-player worlds. Download a Java Realm world.

Bedrock Realms
Use the Realm’s World or Slots controls to download a world. Minecraft Help says the downloaded copy appears in All Worlds and can also be copied from file storage. Minecraft Help’s Realm download guidance.
Xbox
If a world is local-only, Minecraft Help describes uploading it by opening Settings > Storage > Manage Worlds. Check the world’s sync status and follow the current Help steps for your Xbox setup before changing devices.

A USB drive can be a destination for a manually copied or exported world if the platform supports that workflow. It is not where Minecraft automatically saves every world.

Restoring a Bedrock Realm backup replaces the current world state with the selected save. Builds and items added after that save will not be present in the restored version. If you may want to keep the current state, download a copy before restoring. Minecraft Help: restore a Realm backup.
Minecraft Help’s current Realm policy describes a rolling set of retained backups: the four most recent saves; then one save every four hours for the preceding 24 hours; one per day from 1 to 8 days ago; one per week from 9 to 36 days ago; and one per month from 37 to 121 days ago. Saves older than 122 days are not retained. The same Help page says a Realm world can be downloaded within 18 months after a subscription expires, while its associated backups are deleted 30 days after expiry. These are service policies and may change; check the live Minecraft Help page before relying on a particular retention window.
Can you move a world between Minecraft editions?
Java and Bedrock use different world-storage formats, so a world should not be treated as a save file that can freely move between the editions. A copy or export is useful for backup or compatible transfers, but moving a world across editions may require conversion. The format difference alone does not establish that a world will open correctly in the other edition.
