A focused run through the central story is a very different goal from clearing every zone’s optional quests, Chapter and DLC storylines, and group-dungeon quests. Player reports suggest that broad completion can take hundreds of hours, but they are anecdotes—not a measured average or a dependable current total.
What counts as “all quests” in ESO?
Before estimating a playthrough, decide what completion means. ESO’s quest content spans several kinds of stories and activities, and some categories do not have a finite endpoint.

- Main quest: The central narrative, but only one part of the game’s quest content.
- Alliance stories: The original faction storylines cover multiple zones. The Cadwell’s Silver and Gold routes take players through the other alliances after the main quest.
- Zone stories and side quests: Finishing a zone’s main story does not necessarily mean every optional quest there is complete. Map completion is not a reliable guarantee that every quest has been found.
- Chapter and DLC stories: New releases add quest content. The official 2025 Content Pass FAQ describes storylines and quests in Seasons of the Worm Cult Parts 1 and 2. It said Solstice zone content would become available to ESO Plus members sometime in 2026; check current access details, since availability can change.
- Group, PvP, and repeatable quests: Dungeon stories, PvP-zone quests, and daily quests need their own inclusion rules. Repeatable quests have no finite “all complete” point unless you set a stopping rule.
Achievements are not a universal checklist for every quest. For example, the official Craglorn Completist achievement description requires the main quests in Lower and Upper Craglorn and The Time-Lost Warrior; it also notes that two side quests count toward another achievement but are no longer required for Craglorn Completist.
How long do different completion goals take?
The available evidence does not support a reliable hours-per-quest formula. Your time depends on whether you focus on objectives or read dialogue, explore, and take detours, as well as whether you include group content and expansions.

| Completion goal | What it includes | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Main-story run | The central narrative, without assuming every alliance, zone, or optional quest. | No current, authoritative completion-time estimate is established in the sources cited here. |
| Zone-story completion | Zone storylines, potentially across the base game and selected Chapters or DLC. | A 2022 High Isle forum poll gathered responses ranging from under 10 hours to over 40 hours for story and map content. It reflects different players’ approaches in one zone, not a benchmark for the full game. Source: ESO forum poll. |
| Broad zone completion | Zone stories plus optional quests and other map objectives. | A 2020 forum respondent said 100% zone-map completion could take “potentially several hundred hours.” The same player estimated one to two afternoons for a base-game zone or smaller DLC and a weekend or longer for Chapters. These are personal planning estimates, not measured averages. Source: ESO forum discussion. |
| Every quest, including group content and new releases | A player-defined list spanning the base game, expansions, optional quests, and any included group content. | No verified total-hour figure is available. The target changes as ESO adds quests, and repeatables require a defined stopping rule. |
Why published quest counts do not settle the question
Quest counts vary with what a site includes and when it was updated. Elder Scrolls Online Info lists 987 items; that is a third-party directory count, not an official or confirmed current total. A 2022 forum discussion repeats an unofficial estimate of about 2,350 quests, while also discussing the difficulty of counting incomplete categories. Neither number should be treated as ESO’s official current quest total. Source: ESO forum discussion.
Those counts are not directly comparable, and neither provides a sound basis for multiplying by an assumed time per quest. Quest length varies, and completion definitions differ.

How to make a useful personal estimate
- Write down your scope. Choose main quest, zone stories, or every optional quest; specify whether you will include other alliance stories, Chapters and DLC, dungeons, and PvP zones.
- Decide how you play. Reading dialogue and exploring will take longer than moving directly between objectives. Do not use a fast, focused run to predict a completionist playthrough.
- Track one comparable area. Time your own play in a zone using the same rules you intend to follow elsewhere. Use that as a personal planning reference, not a universal rate for every zone or quest.
- Recheck your content access and target. ESO adds quest content, and access can depend on release and membership details. The official 2025 Content Pass FAQ describes content included in that pass, but it does not give a total completion time for the game.
