The fungus will not grow simply by waiting.
What you need
- Crimson fungus and crimson nylium, or warped fungus and warped nylium.
- Bone meal to trigger a growth attempt.
Mojang’s Java Edition release notes introduced crimson and warped fungi and recommend bone meal for growing them: Minecraft: Java Edition—Nether Update. The notes establish the basic action, but they are historical release material rather than confirmation of every edge case in every current edition or version.
How to grow a large fungus
- Choose which fungus to grow and obtain its matching nylium block.
- Place crimson fungus directly on crimson nylium, or warped fungus directly on warped nylium. The varieties require different substrates; the Minecraft Wiki’s warped nylium reference says bone meal is not consumed when warped fungus is placed on the wrong type of nylium.
- Use bone meal on the planted fungus to attempt to grow its large form. The attempt can fail, so bone meal does not guarantee a large fungus every time.
Why the fungus is not growing
It is growing without bone meal
Waiting will not make the small fungus mature: the Minecraft Wiki’s huge fungus tutorial says it does not grow through random ticks. Use bone meal to initiate the growth attempt.
The bone meal does not work
Check the substrate first. Crimson fungus belongs on crimson nylium; warped fungus belongs on warped nylium. For warped fungus, the warped-nylium reference specifically notes that bone meal is not consumed on an incorrect nylium type.

You need a version-specific answer
The cited official notes confirm the basic bone-meal mechanic, while the detailed substrate and random-tick behavior above comes from community-maintained Minecraft Wiki references accessed October 8, 2026. Exact success chances, space requirements, and current behavior across Java and Bedrock editions are not established by those sources, so do not assume a particular percentage or universal clearance rule.
