For a typical mob farm, start with a drop of about 22 blocks if you want unarmored zombies, skeletons, and creepers to survive at roughly one health point for a finishing hit. A 24-block fall will usually kill those mobs outright. These are practical guidelines, not guarantees: mob type, equipment, and fall behavior can change the result.
One-hit range versus a lethal drop
A mob that is in “one-hit” range is still alive; the fall has weakened it so you can finish it with a hit. A lethal drop is meant to kill it without your help. The Minecraft Wiki’s mob-grinder tutorial lists 23.5 blocks as the minimum lethal fall for zombies, skeletons, and creepers, and rounds that guidance to a 24-block drop. Its one-hit recommendation is an inference from using a slightly shorter-than-lethal fall, so about 22 blocks is a useful starting point, not an exact universal threshold. Typical minimum fall heights by mob
The tutorial gives these minimum fall heights to death. For a manual finishing chamber, make the drop shorter than the listed lethal height; for an automatic-kill chamber, use the lethal height as a starting reference.
| Mob | Listed minimum fall to death |
|---|---|
| Cave spider | 15 blocks |
| Spider | 19 blocks |
| Skeleton | 23.5 blocks |
| Creeper | 23.5 blocks |
| Zombie | 23.5 blocks |
| Witch | 29 blocks |
| Enderman | 43 blocks |
These figures come from community-maintained reference material, not an official version-specific specification. The cited table does not establish separate current values for Java and Bedrock editions, so treat it as typical farm guidance and test the design in your edition and version.

What can change the result?
Fall immunity
Some mobs are immune to fall damage, so increasing the shaft height will not make them reliably reach one-hit range. The tutorial names iron golems, chickens, cats, and flying mobs such as blazes as examples; Microsoft’s Bedrock damage reference also identifies cats as immune to fall damage. Wall contact and armor
Spiders can catch on walls during a fall and take less damage than expected. Give the shaft enough width to reduce wall contact. Some zombies and skeletons may spawn wearing Feather Falling boots or other protective equipment, which can also let them survive a drop intended to kill ordinary mobs. If your automatic chamber leaves survivors, adjust it cautiously and test again. Minecraft Wiki mob-grinder tutorial

Choosing a drop for your farm
- For a hand-finished chamber: Try about 22 blocks for unarmored zombies, skeletons, or creepers, then check whether mobs survive in the target edition and version.
- For automatic kills: A 24-block drop is the usual starting point for those three common mobs. Expect occasional survivors if armor or other conditions reduce damage.
- For other mob types: Use the mob-specific heights in the table as references; a single drop height will not suit every mob.
- For immune or wall-catching mobs: Change the farm design or separate those mobs rather than relying on a taller shaft.
Mob farms often use water streams to move mobs from spawning platforms toward the fall chamber. Make sure the transport route ends above the intended drop, and account for the distance mobs actually fall rather than counting blocks in a nearby wall.
