Where WorldEdit works—and which build to install
WorldEdit supports Java Edition in single-player/local games and on dedicated servers. It is not available for Minecraft Realms, Bedrock Edition, Windows 10 Edition, or Pocket Edition, according to the WorldEdit installation documentation.
Choose an installation route that fits the software you already use. WorldEdit requires a compatible mod loader or server platform, and the file must match your Minecraft version.

For a Bukkit-based server, the documented sequence is to put the WorldEdit .jar in the server’s plugins folder and start the server. Local mod installation differs, so follow the instructions for the loader and Minecraft version you use rather than applying the server steps to a local game.

Select a region to edit
A cuboid selection is a 3D, world-aligned rectangle defined by two corner points. The default selection tool is a wooden axe.
- Enter
//wandto get the selection wand. - Left-click the first corner of the area.
- Right-click the opposite corner.
- Run
//sizeto check the selected region’s dimensions and volume.
You can set corners without the wand: use //pos1 and //pos2 for your current positions, or //hpos1 and //hpos2 to set corners by targeting blocks.

Choose a selection shape
For a non-cuboid region, change selection mode with //sel <mode>. Documented options include polygon, ellipsoid, sphere, cylinder, and convex hull. Adjust a selection with commands such as //expand, //outset, //inset, and //trim; use //help in-game if you need the exact syntax for an operation.
Inspect the selection, then make the edit
Before changing a large area, confirm its bounds and contents. //size checks dimensions; //count <mask> counts matching blocks, while //distr reports the distribution of blocks in the selection. These checks can reveal a selection that is larger or different from what you intended.

To replace every block in the selected region with bedrock, the quick start example is:
//set minecraft:bedrock
The minecraft: namespace is optional for vanilla blocks, but using a full identifier makes the target clear. Numeric block IDs are legacy identifiers for Minecraft 1.12 and earlier; use named block identifiers for current versions.

The //drawsel command can display a server-side selection outline, but the documented setup limits it to cuboids no larger than 48×48×48 and requires Creative mode. A client-side visualization mod such as WorldEdit CUI for Fabric is another way to view selections.
Copy and paste with the clipboard
//copy stores the selected blocks in a temporary clipboard for your current session. The clipboard also records your position relative to the structure, and that offset determines where a normal //paste lands. For example, if you want a copied bridge to appear beneath you, stand above it when you copy.

Before pasting a large structure, use //paste -n to select the target region and verify where it will go. You can transform clipboard contents with //rotate or //flip; multiples of 90 degrees are the predictable choice for rotation.
Save a structure as a schematic
A clipboard is temporary session content. A schematic lets you save a structure for later use:
- Copy the structure with
//copy. - Save it with
//schem save <filename>. - Load it in a later session with
//schem load <filename>.
WorldEdit 7 documentation describes the Sponge schematic format, using the .schem extension, as the newer format introduced with WorldEdit 7 for Minecraft 1.13. Legacy .schematic files can be imported, but WorldEdit does not write them. Available formats may vary; check the in-game //schem formats output for the formats supported by your installation.
