There is no evidence here that one damage type is universally strongest; choose the variant that fits your build. If you own Phantom Liberty, the Jailbreak skill adds a charged punch option.
Get and upgrade Gorilla Arms at a Ripperdoc
- Visit a Ripperdoc. Open the available arm cyberware and choose Gorilla Arms. PC Gamer’s post-2.0 guide says most Ripperdocs sell them, with stock quality tied to character level: Gorilla Arms guide.
- Install the arms. Select them in the Ripperdoc’s cyberware screen and equip them in the arm slot.
- Upgrade them as you progress. Return to a Ripperdoc and use components corresponding to the arms’ quality. CD PROJEKT RED’s support instructions state, “You can also upgrade your equipped cyberware at ripperdocs by using item components corresponding to its quality.” Crafting and upgrading tips.
In the current tier terminology, cyberware Tier 1 is available from level 1, Tier 2 from level 10, Tier 3 from level 20, Tier 4 from level 30, and Tier 5 from level 40. These are levels at which items of that tier become widely available, not guarantees that every Ripperdoc will stock a specific item. Do not mistake the chart’s Tier 5++ threshold at level 51 for a Gorilla Arms upgrade: that entry is under Weapons and is marked Phantom Liberty-only. The chart’s cyberware section ends at Tier 5.
What changed in Update 2.0
Update 2.0 moved cyberware upgrades to the Ripperdoc screen and replaced the old Common-to-Legendary rarity labels with numbered Tiers. Vendor stock expands with player level. CD PROJEKT RED also says cyberware is attuned to particular Attributes, with stronger stat bonuses at higher levels of the associated Attribute; cyberware capacity is limited and tied to level. Choose a damage type for your build
PC Gamer’s guide lists physical, toxic, thermal, and electrifying Gorilla Arms. The available source does not provide controlled damage testing to establish a single best type, so treat the choice as a build and preference decision rather than a universal ranking.
- Physical: a straightforward choice if you want blunt melee damage without specializing around an elemental effect.
- Toxic, thermal, or electrifying: consider these if the damage type better fits your character or the enemies you are facing. The cited guide identifies the variants but does not establish comparative damage or matchup rankings.
For a Gorilla Arms-focused character, PC Gamer recommends Body blunt-weapon perks such as Wrecking Ball, Quake, and Savage Sling. Reflexes mobility perks can help close distance, while Technical Ability offers cyberware-related bonuses. These are build recommendations, not official numeric rankings or proof that one allocation produces the highest damage.

Use Jailbreak if you own Phantom Liberty
Phantom Liberty’s Jailbreak skill is an optional way to build around Gorilla Arms. PC Gamer describes attacks as charging the arms, with a subsequent charged attack releasing a powerful punch in a cone. The expansion is required for this skill; it is not required to acquire or tier up Gorilla Arms.

For a practical upgrade target, aim for Tier 5 Gorilla Arms once that tier is available, then choose a damage type and perks that suit your build. That does not identify a proven highest-damage configuration: the available sources do not establish current damage figures, component costs, or a tested winner among variants. Check the in-game cyberware entry for exact values in your version of the game.

When deciding whether to build around the arms, weigh their tier and your character level alongside damage-type preference, whether you own Phantom Liberty for Jailbreak, and the opportunity cost of Attributes, perks, and cyberware capacity. The variant and perk advice comes from PC Gamer’s guide last updated September 20, 2023, so it should not be treated as a newly tested balance comparison.
