To catch Groudon or Kyogre in Pokémon GO, defeat one in a featured five-star raid and then catch it in the post-raid encounter. Their raid availability rotates, so check the in-game raid map and official event news before planning a raid. To unlock Primal Reversion, you also need the matching Primal Energy, which can come from Primal Raids or certain research tasks.
Catch Groudon or Kyogre in a five-star raid
The main way to get either Pokémon is to win a raid featuring its regular form. Niantic’s Raid Battles help page explains that defeating a raid boss gives players an opportunity to catch it. Winning is not the same as an automatic capture: complete the encounter afterward to add the Pokémon to your collection.

Groudon and Kyogre are not guaranteed to be in raids at all times. Their appearances are scheduled as part of changing raid rotations and events. For example, Pokémon GO announced regular Groudon and Kyogre in five-star raids on July 6, 2026, and their Primal forms in Primal Raids on July 10. Those are past dates, not confirmation of availability on October 8, 2026. See the Road of Legends announcement and check the game for the current lineup.
Check whether either Pokémon is available now
Look at the in-game raid map for active and upcoming raids, and review official Pokémon GO announcements for event schedules. Niantic advises players to follow in-game news and official channels for raid information; a past event listing cannot establish what is available today. The 2026 Road of Legends schedule is useful as an example of how the regular and Primal forms can appear in separate raid windows, not as a current schedule.

Choose the right raid for your goal
| Your goal | What to look for | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Catch Groudon or Kyogre | A five-star raid featuring the regular Pokémon | A post-raid catch encounter after you win |
| Earn Primal Energy | A Primal Raid featuring Primal Groudon or Primal Kyogre, or eligible research tasks | Primal Energy for the corresponding Pokémon |
Primal Energy and the catch encounter are separate goals. A Primal Raid is a way to earn energy; it does not replace the regular-form raid route when your aim is to catch Groudon or Kyogre.
Earn Primal Energy for Primal Reversion
Niantic says Primal Energy can be earned by defeating Primal Kyogre or Primal Groudon in a Raid Battle or by completing specific research tasks. You need the energy associated with the Pokémon you want to revert. Read Niantic’s Primal Reversion announcement for the mechanic and its energy sources. Check the task details in-game: not every research task awards Primal Energy.

Can you join remotely?
Remote raid access depends on the event’s rules. The official Pokémon GO Wild Area: Global listing said its featured raids could be entered with Remote Raid Passes, Raid Passes, and Premium Battle Passes. That confirms remote access for that event only; check the announcement for any future raid event rather than assuming the same pass options apply.
