Rescue Waddle Dees to expand the town and its facilities, then use the machine to fill gaps in your collection. Nintendo describes the game as having “around 250” figures; a 2022 guide lists 256, so the exact total is not consistently established. The 2025 Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World adds a Gotcha Machine EX and more figures, so make sure your guide matches your edition.
How to collect figures in the original Nintendo Switch game
- Rescue Waddle Dees. Saving Waddle Dees expands Waddle Dee Town and opens or grows its facilities, including the figure-collection area. Nintendo describes the town’s growth on its Kirby and the Forgotten Land game page.
- Check stages for capsules. Look for capsules as you play through stages and collect any you find. A specialist guide says capsules yield random figures, rather than letting you select a specific missing one. Nintendo Link’s Gotcha Machine Alley guide describes this route.
- Spend coins at Gotcha Machine Alley. Use in-game coins at the town’s Gotcha Machine to receive figures. Nintendo says coins can be earned by playing stages or working part-time at the Waddle Dee Café; see its developer interview. The machine’s result is random, so keep using it to add figures you have not collected.
- Check the collection as you go. Compare what you have with the figures available in your edition, and keep collecting capsules and spending coins until you have completed that collection. The sources do not establish a verified item-by-item checklist or every figure’s special unlock condition.
How the two collection routes differ
| Route | Where | What you use | How specific the result is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stage capsules | During stages | A capsule you find | Random figure, according to Nintendo Link’s guide |
| Gotcha Machine | Gotcha Machine Alley in Waddle Dee Town | In-game coins | Random figure; Nintendo Link’s guide describes the machine as random |
Nintendo also says figures include descriptions of characters and items, so collecting them can reveal additional details about the game’s world. The developer interview quotes director Shinya Kumazaki describing them as more than collectibles: “They also come with descriptions of characters and items”—content for players curious about the game’s mysteries.
How many figures are there?
The count depends on which source you consult. In a 2022 Nintendo developer interview, Nintendo gave an approximate total of “around 250 figures.” Nintendo Link’s 2022 guide reports 256. The sources do not reconcile the difference, so treat 256 as that guide’s count, not an exact total confirmed by Nintendo.
Nintendo Link’s guide also describes four Gotcha Machine volumes and rarity labels from one to four stars. Those details describe the original game’s collection system; they do not establish a complete, verified list of every figure’s unique unlock requirement.

Does the Switch 2 Edition have the same figures?
No. Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World adds Starry Stages, Starry Coins, a Gotcha Machine EX and additional figures. TechRadar’s 2025 coverage describes these additions in its report on the Switch 2 Edition. A guide for the original Switch release may not cover the added content; use edition-specific directions rather than combining counts or unlock steps.

Nintendo says amiibo can provide coins and items, with better rewards from Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede or Waddle Dee amiibo from the Kirby or Super Smash Bros. series. Its game page does not say amiibo directly unlock figures, so they are an optional source of rewards, not a documented figure-collection method.
