Holding the item button without aiming down is different: it keeps certain items behind you as a shield.
How to throw an item behind you
- Hold L or ZL to use your item.
- While holding the button, tilt the left stick down.
- Release the item button to throw the item behind your kart.
This input is described in Nintendo Life’s item guide and corroborated for shells by a GameFAQs Switch Q&A. The exact control can depend on your controller layout.
Which items can you throw backwards?
Direction controls vary by item, so the down-stick input does not make every item behave alike.
Green shells
Green shells can be thrown forwards or backwards. Aim down while using the shell to send it behind you. Nintendo Life’s guide covers the direction input.

Bananas
A banana is normally deployed behind the kart. To throw it forward instead, press up on the left stick while using it. That default drop is not the same as aiming a throwable item backwards, as Nintendo Life explains.
Throwing an item versus holding it behind you
To keep certain items behind your kart as a defensive barrier, hold L or ZL without releasing the item. This can block some incoming attacks. It is a defensive hold, not a backwards throw; to throw an eligible item, aim down and release the item button. See Nintendo Life’s item guide for the distinction.
