The chestplate costs the most, at 8 ingots. Minecraft Wiki’s achievement guide lists the full-set total and piece recipes.
Iron ingots for each piece of armor
| Armor piece | Iron ingots |
|---|---|
| Helmet | 5 |
| Chestplate | 8 |
| Leggings | 7 |
| Boots | 4 |
| Full armor set | 24 |
The total is 5 + 8 + 7 + 4 = 24 ingots. Here, “full set” means the four armor slots, not a collection of armor and tools.
If you mean armor plus basic tools
The five basic iron tools cost 11 more ingots: a sword (2), pickaxe (3), axe (3), shovel (1), and hoe (2). Including all four armor pieces, that broader loadout takes 35 iron ingots. The Minecraft Wiki’s beginner crafting guide covers the basic tool recipes.
Check recipes in your game
Use the in-game recipe book or crafting table to check recipes for your game. Minecraft’s official crafting explainer describes both features. The total above is for standard recipes; modded installations may change recipes, and a current recipe is not guaranteed in future versions.

- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
