Maximum gold versus a high-odds attempt
The two useful answers depend on whether you mean the biggest reported attempt or the biggest amount at the game’s displayed 90% success ceiling. The figures below come from the TrueAchievements Skyrim Special Edition walkthrough; its 3,102-gold example assumes a target with Pickpocket skill 15.

If avoiding a failed theft matters more than taking the largest possible stack, the 2,212-gold figure is the more practical reference. Neither amount should be treated as guaranteed or as applying to every target, edition, build, or exploit scenario.
How pickpocketing works
Bethesda’s Skyrim manual says, “You must be sneaking to pickpocket.” While sneaking, approach an NPC, open their inventory, select an item, and try to take it. The manual says you can also plant an item. Looking at a character’s inventory by itself is not a crime; being detected during the theft is.

Pickpocket skill and detection
Bethesda’s manual gives a qualitative rule rather than a numerical formula: “The higher your Pickpocket skill, the lower the chance you’ll be caught.” It does not specify a gold limit or confirm the walkthrough’s amounts, so skill should be understood as affecting detection risk rather than as proof of a universal maximum.
What happens if you are caught
Detected pickpocketing can create a bounty in the city or town where the crime occurs, and guards may arrest you. The manual says paying the bounty removes stolen items from your inventory, including items you stole without being detected. Resisting arrest can leave the bounty active. That makes the 1% attempt especially risky if you are carrying other stolen goods.

Is 3,102 gold the game’s universal maximum?
That is not established by the available sources. The official manual explains the basic pickpocketing and crime rules but does not publish a gold cap or probability formula. The 3,102- and 2,212-gold values are from a secondary walkthrough, and they should be cited as reported figures with their odds and target assumption.
Other online claims describe different amounts in connection with particular builds or exploit conditions, but the sources cited here do not independently verify or reconcile them. They also do not settle a maximum for incapacitated targets. Treat 3,102 gold as the reported awake-target ceiling under the stated walkthrough assumption, not as a guarantee across every version or scenario.
