You need at least 400 LP to reach Grandmaster in League of Legends Ranked, and you must also have more LP than the lowest Grandmaster in your region. So 400 LP is a minimum, not a guarantee: the live regional cutoff may be higher.
Why 400 LP may not be enough
Grandmaster is a regional leaderboard tier, not a rank awarded automatically at one fixed LP total. Riot Games Support’s rules require both the 400 LP floor and a qualifying position above the lowest Grandmaster in your region. The leaderboard cutoff can therefore rise above 400 LP as standings change.
Riot recalculates Grandmaster and Challenger standings on a 24-hour rotation. Your LP total may meet the minimum while still falling short of the regional cutoff at the next calculation.
How to check your region’s current cutoff
Riot directs players to the regional leaderboard in the Ranked tab of their in-game profile. Check the standing for the region and queue you play; a capacity figure is not the same as the current LP cutoff or the number of players currently occupying a tier.

Why region and queue matter
Grandmaster places are limited, and Riot’s listed caps differ by region and ranked queue. In Riot’s May 30, 2026 support article, the listed Solo/Duo capacity is 700 Grandmaster places in EUW and 100 in Japan. North America is listed with 700 Solo/Duo places and 100 Flex places. These are tier-slot caps from that article, not current live player counts.
Riot’s Indonesian-language support article, “Master, Grandmaster, dan Challenger”, dated May 30, 2026, gives the promotion rule, leaderboard schedule, regional and queue caps, and Apex-tier decay rules. Because ranked rules and leaderboard standings can change, use the in-game leaderboard for the current cutoff.

Promotion and staying in Grandmaster are different
The same LP and leaderboard conditions matter for retention: Riot says a Grandmaster player demotes if their LP falls below 400 or below the lowest Grandmaster’s LP in their region. Meeting the entry requirement once does not remove the need to remain above the applicable thresholds.
Apex-tier inactivity decay
Riot’s article says Apex-tier players lose 75 LP for each inactive day. Each game earns one banked day of decay protection, up to a maximum of 14 banked days. This inactivity rule is separate from the LP needed to qualify for Grandmaster.

How rare is Grandmaster?
Riot’s support article says fewer than 1% of players have ever reached this competitive level. That is a general historical rarity statement, not a current percentage for a particular region or queue.
