How Much RAM Should You Allocate to CurseForge?

CurseForge defaults Minecraft modpacks to 4 GB. Use the pack author’s recommendation, leave memory for your computer, and check Java’s F3 screen if lag persists.

For most CurseForge Minecraft modpacks, start with the default 4 GB (4096 MB). CurseForge recommends roughly 4–6 GB for lighter modded play and 6–10 GB or more for heavier packs, but the pack author’s guidance and your computer’s total RAM matter more than a one-size-fits-all number. Leave enough memory for Windows or macOS and your other open apps.

Recommended RAM by Minecraft setup

Setup Starting point How to use the figure
Vanilla Minecraft 2–4 GB CurseForge’s blog gives this as a general range for vanilla play. It is distinct from the app’s advice not to lower a modpack’s allocation below 4 GB.
Light modded play 4–6 GB CurseForge’s 2025 guidance; treat it as a starting range, not a performance guarantee.
Heavy modpack 6–10 GB or more Use the pack author’s recommendation and increase only if your computer has memory to spare.
A specific pack Follow its stated requirement The Atlas Project requests 8–10 GB allocated, while noting that its system figures are benchmarks that may not be very accurate. This is an example of pack-to-pack variation, not a universal target.

CurseForge Support says its modpack allocation defaults to 4 GB (4096 MB), recommends not lowering it below 4 GB, and cautions against raising it so far that the system is negatively affected. The app may also apply a modpack author’s recommendation automatically when one is available. Check the pack page or its in-app recommendation before overriding the default. Leave RAM for the rest of your computer

The allocation setting controls the maximum memory available to Minecraft Java; it is not a direction to assign all installed RAM to the game. Your operating system, launcher, browser, voice chat, and other running programs also need memory. If Minecraft’s allocation is too large relative to total system RAM, the computer can become sluggish rather than faster.

Minecraft.net’s Java Edition requirements article, published July 21, 2026, lists total-system minimums of 8 GB with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics, and recommends 16 GB total. Those figures target 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast for the minimum and 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy for the recommendation; they are general Java Edition system requirements, not a modpack allocation formula. CurseForge documents a warning when the allocation exceeds 75% of total system RAM. That is an app warning threshold, not a recommended target. Do not treat it as a safe amount to allocate: choose a value that still leaves practical room for the system and any other programs you use.

How to change the CurseForge allocation

You can set memory globally for Minecraft or separately for one modpack. Interface labels may vary between app versions.

Set a general Minecraft allocation

  1. Open CurseForge and go to Settings → Minecraft → Java Settings.
  2. Adjust the allocated-memory slider to the amount you want Minecraft to be able to use.

Set a per-profile allocation

  1. Select the modpack profile in CurseForge.
  2. Open its three-dot menu and choose Profile Options.
  3. Enable Custom RAM Allocation, set the maximum, and save.

A profile-specific value is useful when one pack needs a different amount than your usual setup. If the author provides a recommendation, use that as your reference rather than assuming all packs need the same allocation.

Check whether Minecraft is using the available memory

In Minecraft Java Edition, press F3 to open the debug screen and look at the memory line. CurseForge’s guide gives Mem: 1200/6144MB as an example: the first number is current use and the second is the maximum available under the configured allocation. Java does not need to use the full maximum continuously, so a lower current-use number does not by itself mean the setting failed. CurseForge Blog

If more RAM does not fix lag

Increasing the allocation may help when memory is the constraint, but it is not a general FPS fix. CurseForge’s guide also names a weak CPU, a slow hard drive, and problematic mods as possible causes of continued lag. If the game remains slow after a sensible allocation change, avoid repeatedly raising the maximum; investigate those other bottlenecks instead. The available guidance does not establish a universal RAM amount based on mod count or a performance benchmark comparing allocation sizes.
