Fish in lava to get a Demon Conch in Terraria. It is a rare pre-Hardmode catch, so bring a method that lets you fish in lava and expect a potentially long wait.
How to catch a Demon Conch
- Get a lava-fishing method. The listed options are lava bait, the Hotline Fishing Hook, or lava-proof fishing equipment. These let you fish in lava; the references do not establish that every option is available early, so check what you have unlocked before setting out. See the Fishing reference for the general lava-fishing requirements.
- Find lava and fish in it. The Demon Conch is obtained by lava fishing. The item reference does not list crafting, enemy drops, or crates as ways to get it: Demon Conch.
- Keep trying. The catch chance depends on Fishing Power, game mode, and whether a Crate Potion is active. Some attempts may produce no bite if the required catch quality is not reached.
What affects the catch chance?
The item reference gives this probability formula: 1 / floor(4500 / F) × H × C, where F is Fishing Power, H is the mode factor, and C is the Crate Potion factor. The mode factor is 1/9 in pre-Hardmode and 1/12 in Hardmode; the potion factor is 23/24 with a Crate Potion and 59/60 without one. The formula is based on Desktop 1.4.5.6 code, so treat it as version-specific rather than a guaranteed rate across every platform or version.

Because the formula uses Fishing Power and mode, there is no single fixed number of casts that guarantees the item. A no-bite attempt is also possible, so an extended grind does not necessarily mean your setup is broken.
What happens when you use the Demon Conch?
Using the Demon Conch teleports you to the center of the Underworld after 0.75 seconds. The destination needs a suitable, safe landing area; it is not a way to bypass an obstructed or unsafe arrival point. The item reference describes restrictions on the landing area.
