That provenance matters: “around 600,000” is a useful historical answer to the question, but it should not be treated as an official or independently verified measurement.
What does the 1,400-line figure mean?
The same account gives 1,400 lines for the planet terrain-generation code. That is a specific subsystem, not an alternative estimate for the entire game. The account describes No Man’s Sky as using deterministic, seed-based procedural systems to generate much of its universe, including planets and their features. A large number of generated worlds does not mean each world has a separately authored block of code.

How current and complete is the estimate?
The 600,000 figure is tied to the game’s early period, around February 2016. The sources available here do not establish a current total, identify a code snapshot, or explain what was counted. In particular, they do not say whether platform-specific code, development tools, third-party libraries, generated code, or later additions are included.
The Guardian’s 2018 account says Sean Murray worked alone for a year on an early tech demo that could generate planets and galaxies, and that the development team averaged six people from 2011 to 2016.
