To ride a dragon in the Minecraft Ice and Fire mod, hatch an egg, raise the dragon to Stage 3, then try interacting with it using an empty hand. The Ice Dragon community page describes that as the mounting method. Once mounted, the commonly listed defaults use WASD to steer, Space to ascend or take off, X to descend, and Shift to dismount.
How to mount and ride a dragon
- Hatch an egg and tame the hatchling. Community guidance says the player who is nearby when the egg hatches becomes its owner. See the Ice Dragon community page and the general Dragons page.
- Raise it to Stage 3. The cited pages say Stage 1 and Stage 2 dragons cannot be ridden; Stage 3 and older dragons can.
- Interact with the tamed dragon using an empty hand. The Ice Dragon page specifically gives this as the way to mount. If it does not work, see the saddle caveat below.
- Use the riding controls. The community page lists these default bindings:
| Action | Commonly listed default |
|---|---|
| Steer | WASD |
| Ascend while flying | Space |
| Start flying from the ground | Hold Space for more than a second |
| Descend | X |
| Dismount | Shift |
| Use breath attack | R |
| Strike the targeted mob | G |
These are reported defaults, not guaranteed bindings for every installation. If a key has no effect, check the in-game controls menu and the configuration used by your modpack.
Does the dragon need a saddle?
The available community instructions conflict. The Ice Dragon page says to mount a Stage 3-or-older tamed dragon by interacting with it using an empty hand. A separate guide says to apply a saddle once the dragon reaches adulthood. Neither instruction is tied to a specific mod build, so the sources do not establish that a saddle is required in every version.
Try the empty-hand interaction first. If it fails, check the installed release’s documentation or test the interaction behavior in-game; do not assume that a saddle rule from another version applies to yours.

The official CurseForge listing identifies Ice and Fire as a Minecraft mod and includes releases for Minecraft 1.18.2, 1.19.2, and 1.20.1. The riding instructions above are not mapped to each of those builds. When troubleshooting, note both your Minecraft version and your Ice and Fire release, then verify that the controls and interaction instructions match that combination.
