In multiplayer, the server can cap how far terrain is sent, and on Java servers a separate entity-broadcast setting can make players disappear even while terrain remains visible. Which fix applies depends on the edition and server type.
Start with Render Distance
Render Distance controls how far your own game draws the world and visible content. On Bedrock, Microsoft defines it as the distance, measured in chunks, from the player or camera at which blocks, entities, and other potentially visible items are drawn. The guide gives a range of 4–96 chunks, but device and Realm limits can differ. A chunk is 16 blocks wide by 16 blocks long; that unit does not translate into a guaranteed visibility radius in every direction. - Open Minecraft’s video or graphics settings and raise Render Distance by a few chunks.
- Return to the world and check whether players remain visible farther away.
- If performance drops, lower the setting until the game runs smoothly.
A higher setting requires more client graphics work. The exact menu labels and available range can vary by edition, device, and version.
Why a multiplayer server can limit the result
In multiplayer, the client’s Render Distance is not the only limit. The effective chunk range can be constrained by the server’s view-distance; increasing your own slider cannot exceed the server’s cap. Microsoft describes the effective distance as the lower of the client render distance and server view distance in its distance guide.

If you have changed Render Distance but terrain still stops at the same point, ask the server owner or operator what view-distance is set to. On Bedrock Dedicated Server, Microsoft documents a default of 32 chunks and allowed values of 5 or greater, while warning that higher values affect performance. These figures apply to Bedrock Dedicated Server, not automatically to Realms, consoles, or every managed host. See the Bedrock Dedicated Server properties reference.
If terrain renders but players disappear on Java
When terrain remains visible but player avatars or other entities vanish, the Java server may be limiting how far entity information is sent. Ask its operator to check entity-broadcast-range-percentage in the server configuration. Mojang’s Snapshot 20W18A notes explain that higher values make entities visible farther away but cause more network traffic. This is a server-side setting; a player without server access cannot change it for the world.

PaperMC also documents this property, with a default value of 100 for Paper servers, in its server properties reference. Check documentation for the server software and version in use before changing configuration: Java server settings should not be assumed to apply to Bedrock.
Do not confuse render and simulation distance
Simulation Distance controls how far game processing such as entity behavior and block ticking occurs; it is not the main setting for drawing distant players. Raising it just to see farther is unlikely to solve a render or entity-transmission limit, and it can add workload. Microsoft distinguishes simulation from render distance in its guide. Java’s separate simulation-distance server property is also documented in the Java Edition 1.18 release notes.

Check the server type before changing configuration
Realms and managed hosting may not expose every server setting to players or owners. Confirm whether the world is Java or Bedrock, and whether it runs on a Realm, a dedicated server, or third-party server software, before following configuration instructions. There is no single blocks-away figure that guarantees when another player will appear: visibility depends on the client setting, server limits, edition, version, and server configuration.
