The Official Calamity Mod Wiki lists the Unholy Core as a Hardmode crafting material made at a Hellforge.

Where to get Infernal Suevite
Mine it in the Brimstone Crag
Infernal Suevite generates in the Brimstone Crag when the world is created. Mine it with at least a Mythril or Orichalcum Pickaxe. If the Early Hardmode Progression Rework is enabled, the ore progression table places Infernal Suevite after one mechanical boss. Official Infernal Suevite entry

Farm Infernal Congealments
After you defeat the Brimstone Elemental, Infernal Congealments can spawn in the Brimstone Crag. The official wiki lists their Infernal Suevite drop as 10–26 ore at a 100% drop rate. Official Infernal Congealment entry
The two sources have different access requirements: mining depends on your pickaxe and progression, while the enemy drops become available after defeating the Brimstone Elemental. The listed sources do not establish which route takes less time.

How many cores should you make?
Unholy Cores are used in Brimstone-themed equipment and Ashen-themed items. The official page lists 18 uses; check the ingredient count for the item you want before gathering materials. For example, the Charred Idol recipe uses 5 Unholy Cores, 7 Essence of Havoc, and 5 Souls of Night at a Hellforge. Official Unholy Core uses
