Keys are shared across your Vault Hunters, so decide whether an immediate upgrade is worth using one now or whether you would rather save it for later.
Where to find Golden Chests
Borderlands Support confirms that multiple Golden Chests are scattered around Kairos, but its guide does not provide a complete location list. All Things How and PC Gamer identify four hubs where players can find them:

- Carcadia: Ruined Sumplands.
- Belton’s Bore: The Low Leys.
- The Lockaway: Carcadia District.
All Things How describes the chests as large and gold, with a skull emblem, and says they are often near hub vendors or fast travel points. These are guide-reported locations and visual cues, not an official exhaustive map, so explore the hub if you do not spot the chest immediately.
How Golden Keys work
Each Golden Key opens a Golden Chest once. The key is spent when you open the chest, not when you redeem it. Borderlands Support says the reward gear scales to your character’s level at the moment you open the chest; redeeming a key at a lower level does not lock it to that level.

Keys are shared across all Vault Hunters on your account. That does not mean the rewards are shared: the official FAQ says keys are pooled, while tangible gear such as guns and shields is assigned to one Vault Hunter. The key itself cannot be traded or sold, but gear you receive can be traded, sold, or stored.
How to get and redeem Golden Keys
Golden Keys may be offered through promotions, pre-orders, bonus offers, and SHiFT codes. Promotions and codes can expire, so do not assume an older code is still valid.

Redeem through the SHiFT website
Use the Borderlands SHiFT website to redeem a code. The platform account needs to be linked to your SHiFT account for web redemption. After a successful redemption, the key is added directly to your in-game inventory; there is no separate Reward Center claim step for the key.
Redeem in-game
All Things How describes this menu route: pause menu → SHiFT → Rewards, then enter the 25-character code. Menu labels can vary or change, so check the current SHiFT screen on your platform.

Check your key balance
- Open the Inventory tab.
- Hover over Currency in the lower-right corner.
- Check the displayed Golden Key balance.
When should you open a Golden Chest?
Because the gear scales to your level when the chest is opened, the choice depends on what would help your character now. Use a key if an immediate level-appropriate upgrade would be useful; save some if you would rather open them at a higher level. Waiting does not guarantee a better item or a specific rarity, and opening earlier can provide useful campaign gear.
Third-party guides describe rewards such as weapons, shields, class mods, and ordnance, and report a chance at Legendary gear. Borderlands Support confirms quality loot and level scaling but does not guarantee a particular item or rarity. Treat any specific drop as a possibility, not a promise.

If a redeemed key is missing
- Fully close and restart Borderlands 4, especially if the game was left paused or in standby after web redemption.
- Open Inventory and check the balance under Currency.
- If you redeemed in a multiplayer session and the chest will not open, leave and rejoin or restart the session, then try again.
Borderlands Support update notes document a historical fix for Golden Chests not consistently opening after joining a session and redeeming SHiFT keys. That note records a past issue and its fix; it does not establish that the same problem is currently widespread.
