The best way to fight the Illuminate in Helldivers 2 is to respond to what each enemy and mission asks of you—not to rely on one supposedly universal loadout. Track Wretches as they dodge and rush in, keep sustained pressure on regenerating Crushers, and use fire to disrupt small and medium Illuminate. In city missions, watch your routes and cover; on Destroy Exospire, disable the shield generators before attacking the core.
How should you handle the newest Illuminate enemies?
Arrowhead’s October 5, 2026 update introduced Wretches and Crushers. Their stated behaviors call for different responses, but the patch notes do not prescribe particular weapons or weakpoints. Arrowhead’s 7.0.0 patch notes describe the enemies and their mechanics.

Wretches: keep your aim moving with them
Wretches dodge and leap as they advance. Arrowhead describes them as nimble and says they require quick reactions and focused aim. Track them as they change direction, and deal with them promptly when they close instead of assuming they will continue along a predictable path.
Crushers: do not let up the damage
Crushers can regenerate while taking heavy damage. Arrowhead says they need to be worn down quickly and consistently. Keep pressure on them rather than relying on an isolated burst or allowing long pauses, and coordinate squad fire if several Helldivers are available. The cited notes do not identify a specific weapon, weakpoint, or damage threshold.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches#1 Best Overall
- BECOME A LEGEND - You will be assembled into squads of up to four Helldivers and assigned strategic missions. Watch each other’s back – friendly fire is an unfortunate certainty of war, but victory without teamwork is impossible.
- LOADOUTS - Rain down freedom from above, sneak through enemy territory, or grit your teeth and charge head-first into the jaws of combat. How you deliver liberty is your choice; you’ll have access to a wide array of explosive firepower, life-saving armour and battle-changing stratagems… the jewel in every Helldiver’s arsenal.
- REQUISITION - Super Earth recognises your hard work with valuable Requisition. Use it to access different rewards that benefit you, your squad, your destroyer ship and our overall war effort.
- THREATS - Everything on every planet wants you dead. That’s what we’re dealing with. Each enemy has distinct and unpredictable characteristics, tactics, and behaviour – but they all fight ferociously and without fear or morality.
When does fire help against the Illuminate?
Arrowhead’s August 30, 2026 update says flaming small and medium Illuminate can confuse and panic them, prompting random attacks. That makes fire a potential disruption tool against those sizes of enemy; the notes do not establish it as the best answer to every Illuminate unit or faction composition. The 6.1.0 patch notes also describe different Illuminate force compositions: some rely on hordes of Voteless and Fleshmobs with fewer Illuminate units, while Appropriators field Illuminate units supported by varied constructs. Expect the mix to vary rather than planning for a single fixed lineup.
How should you move through Illuminate city missions?
Illuminate city fighting shifts between open spaces and close quarters, with dark alleys and forked routes. That layout makes route awareness and squad coverage especially important: avoid pushing blindly around a turn, and keep track of which paths your group can use to move or regroup. This is a positioning implication of the city layout, not a guaranteed success strategy. Arrowhead introduced the urban setting in its December 17, 2024 update.

- Fight for Super Earth - Freedom. Peace. Managed Democracy. Your Super Earth-born rights. The key pillars of our civilization are under attack from deadly alien creatures conspiring to destroy your planet and its values. The Helldivers must take on the role of peacekeepers in this Galactic War and protect their home planet, spread the message of Democracy and repel the hostiles by force
- Wield Overpowered Weapons - Decide how to take down each enemy surge using a multitude of offensive and defensive tools. Need to take out a massive onslaught of Terminids in one go? Call in a hellpod drop a 500KG bomb, leaving behind only liberated bug corpses. Need to lay down a defensive perimeter? Bring in an Anti-Personnel Mine Deployer to boobytrap the battlefield. As you complete missions, you can upgrade your ship and build an even more impressive arsenal. Everything from shield
- Aim Carefully - They say everything is better with friends, especially when it comes to raining destruction down on the enemies of Liberty! Be warned though: for maximum challenge and collaboration, friendly fire is always on. Communicate with your squadmates and make sure your arsenal only takes down your adversaries
What is the correct order for the Destroy Exospire objective?
- Find the access nodes connected to the underground shield generators.
- Overload the nodes with an electrical surge to bring down the force shield.
- Enter the core chamber once the shield is down.
- Destroy the Dark Fluid cells maintaining the core.
This objective has a defined sequence: deal with the shield-generator access nodes first, then destroy the cells in the chamber. The same 6.1.0 update introduced Illuminate Exostorms, which bring intense wind and lightning; destroying Exospires clears the storm in that region. Check the planet and mission conditions rather than assuming every Illuminate deployment has an Exostorm.
Is there a best all-purpose Illuminate loadout?
The official material cited here does not establish one. Arrowhead’s latest reviewed patch notes, 7.1.0, dated October 7, 2026, discuss enemy spawning and fixes but do not rank an Illuminate build. The available enemy descriptions support choosing around the job—tracking an approaching Wretch, sustaining damage on a Crusher, or disrupting small and medium enemies—not declaring a particular weapon universally best.

Arrowhead’s February 3, 2026 balance notes say light- and medium-penetration weapons have more distinct advantages and describe SMGs and pistols as close-range weapons. That is general role context, not an Illuminate-specific weapon comparison. Use it as a broad way to think about engagement distance, not as proof of a top-performing build. Read the 4.1.0 balance notes.

A May 13, 2025 report from Arrowhead community manager Katherine Baskin described Stingrays providing aerial support and strafing runs, Crescent Overseers barraging Helldivers in cover, and Fleshmobs as large threats. This is useful context, but it predates later additions and is not a complete current roster. Baskin’s PlayStation Blog report covers those earlier threats.
