There is no fixed number of soft resets that guarantees a shiny Pokémon. Each eligible reset is another probability check, and the odds depend on the game, encounter, and any applicable method or item modifiers. At a constant 1-in-4,096 rate, for example, 4,096 attempts gives about a 63.2% chance of seeing at least one shiny—not certainty.
Why there is no guaranteed reset count
A soft reset means restarting around an encounter so you can try it again without keeping the result. The exact reset input and whether the encounter rerolls depend on the Pokémon game and where the save point is. Check the specific game and target before starting; the odds below apply only when that encounter is eligible to be shiny and the reset produces a fresh check.
There is no accumulating pity counter: an unsuccessful reset does not make the next one more likely to succeed. A shiny could appear on the first attempt, or the hunt could continue far beyond the average. If the encounter is shiny-locked in that game, resetting will not produce a shiny at all. Bulbapedia’s Shiny Pokémon reference lists examples and explains that eligibility and odds vary by encounter.
What are the odds per reset?
The commonly cited base shiny rate is 1 in 8,192 in Generations II–V and 1 in 4,096 from Generation VI onward. These are base rates, not universal odds for every encounter: game mechanics and methods can change them. See Bulbapedia’s generation and method rate tables, and verify the exact game and target before applying a figure.

| Game or method | Reported odds | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Generations II–V base rate | 1 in 8,192 | Base rate; some methods and encounters differ. Bulbapedia |
| Generation VI onward base rate | 1 in 4,096 | Base rate; do not assume it applies unchanged to every method. Bulbapedia |
| Pokémon Sword and Shield, base encounter | 1 in 4,096 | Game-specific base example. Smogon University |
| Sword and Shield, with Shiny Charm | About 1 in 1,366 | Reported outside other modifiers; breeding has distinct odds. Smogon University |
| Generation VI onward, Masuda Method | About 1 in 683 | Breeding method, not a soft-reset rate. Bulbapedia |
| Generation VII SOS chain of 31 or more | About 1 in 315.54 | Method-specific odds; the Shiny Charm can modify them. Bulbapedia |
| Sword and Shield Dynamax Adventure | About 1 in 300 | Distinct method with its own rules, not equivalent to a static soft reset. Bulbapedia |
The Shiny Charm affects many rates, but it is not a universal multiplier for every encounter; some gift and other encounters are exceptions. Likewise, odds for breeding, SOS battles, or Dynamax Adventures should not be presented as odds for resetting a static encounter.
How many attempts for a given chance?
If every attempt independently has the same probability of 1 in x, the expected wait is x attempts. “Expected” means the long-run average across many hunts; it does not predict when one particular hunt will finish. After n attempts, the chance of at least one shiny is 1 − (1 − 1/x)n.

| Per-attempt odds | Attempts | Chance of at least one shiny |
|---|---|---|
| 1 in 4,096 | 2,839 | About 50% |
| 1 in 4,096 | 4,096 | About 63.2% |
| 1 in 4,096 | 12,270 | About 95% |
These percentages and attempt counts are mathematical calculations from a fixed 1-in-4,096 chance per attempt, not published game statistics or observed player averages. At 1 in 8,192, the expected wait is 8,192 attempts, but that still is not a guarantee.
Check the encounter before you start resetting
- Identify the exact game and encounter. Odds differ by generation and method, and a reset only helps if it creates a new shiny check for that target.
- Confirm the target is not shiny-locked. Some specific encounters cannot be shiny in a particular game. Check the game-specific entry in Bulbapedia’s Shiny Pokémon reference.
- Account for applicable modifiers. The Shiny Charm and other mechanics affect many, but not all, encounter types. Use a figure that explicitly matches your game and method.
- Track attempts if it helps you stay organized. A paper tally, spreadsheet, or handheld tally counter can record attempts; counting does not change the odds. A community post describes using a manual clicker during a hunt, but that is an anecdote, not evidence that any tool affects results. Reddit discussion.
Are soft resets the best way to hunt?
There is no single best method for every target. Compare methods only within the game you are playing: consider the target’s eligibility, the odds after relevant modifiers, setup effort, time per attempt, and whether the method lets you pursue the species you want. For instance, the Masuda Method and Dynamax Adventures have their own odds and rules; neither figure describes a standard static soft reset.
