Start with the spoiler-safe nudges below; the category names and full groups are farther down, past a clear spoiler break. The reported solution comes from WordHint’s puzzle archive, a secondary source rather than an official New York Times confirmation.
Start with these spoiler-safe hints
- One group consists of things added to teeth.
- Another group can describe a chaotic, dramatic experience.
- Look for four words that complete the titles of films by one director.
- The last group depends on different meanings or associations of one word, including a sports team.
Connections asks players to sort 16 words into four groups of four by shared theme. Some links are indirect: a category may rely on an unusual meaning or on a word that appears as part of a larger phrase, as described in a 2024 research paper about Connections.

How the wordplay works
Dental additions
A bridge, crown, filling, and veneer are all dental additions. This is the most direct connection in the reported set.
#1 Best Overall
Dramatic or chaotic events
A circus, roller coaster, soap opera, or whirlwind can each describe a turbulent or emotionally intense situation, not just a literal thing or show.
David Lynch film titles
Drive, Highway, Peaks, and Velvet are the second words in Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Twin Peaks, and Blue Velvet, respectively.

Meanings and associations of “jet”
The reported category connects an airplane jet, “jet black,” a hot tub jet nozzle, and an NFL player associated with the New York Jets. WordHint’s answer table prints the hot-tub entry as “HOT TUB NOZZLE.”

WordHint’s initial list shows “hot tub” and “nozzle” as separate entries, while its solution table combines them as “HOT TUB NOZZLE.” The two presentations do not reconcile exactly, so the table above preserves the archive’s reported answer formatting rather than implying that its displayed list matches it precisely.

Use the grouping logic on a tricky grid
- Begin with a candidate set supported by a clear shared idea, such as the four dental terms.
- Check that all four words fit the proposed category; do not submit a group just because two or three words seem related.
- For words that remain, test indirect readings: figurative descriptions, title fragments, or alternate senses of a term.
