#1 Best Overall
Green: building add-ons
An ADDITION, ANNEX, EXTENSION or WING can all be an added part of a building. These are relatively direct synonyms in the context of building expansions.
Blue: concerns for a dentist
CAVITY and PLAQUE are familiar dental concerns. CALCULUS is another term for hardened dental plaque, also called tartar, so CALCULUS and TARTAR overlap in meaning. That overlap can make the group feel less tidy, but both belong to the puzzle’s dental theme.
Rank #2
Purple: words that seem longer written than spoken
COLONEL, PHARAOH, WEDNESDAY and WORCESTERSHIRE are the intended wordplay group: their spelling may suggest more sound or syllables than many speakers hear when saying them. This is an impression based on spelling and pronunciation, not a universal rule. In PHARAOH, for example, the second A may look as though it should be pronounced separately, which can make the written form seem longer.

The game’s color scale runs from yellow, the most straightforward group, through purple, the most difficult. The daily puzzle allows up to four mistakes, according to the answer guide. For this edition, the yellow and green links are the most literal; the dental vocabulary requires recognizing the subject area, while the purple set depends on a less objective spelling-and-sound impression.
