Why the word groups can be tricky
Some words invite more than one plausible association, so the intended connection may not be obvious until you compare the whole board. The New York Times Help Center explains that the game is designed this way: “Each puzzle has exactly one solution and is meant to be tricky by having words that could fit into multiple categories.”

How to play or find older Connections puzzles
Connections gives players 16 words and asks them to sort them into four groups of four that share a theme. The colors indicate difficulty: yellow is the easiest group and purple the trickiest. The NYT says its editors curate the words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone and is available in the Connections game, the NYT Games app, nytimes.com/theathletic, and the News app. NYT Connections rules and access details.
The NYT archive goes back to June 12, 2023, and access is available to All Access and Games subscribers. An NYT account is required to save archive progress and history. Completed archived puzzles cannot be replayed; archive play can affect some stats but does not change current or maximum streaks. NYT Connections archive information.
