If you’re looking for the historical NYT Connections puzzle #697, the matching date is May 8, 2025. Its four groups are about putting words on paper, Yahtzee equipment, action-movie franchise characters, and words ending in “stick.” A page carrying the same date and puzzle number but different answers appears to have a year or content mismatch.

Answers for May 8, 2025
TechRadar and Try Hard Guides independently list the same four groups for the May 8, 2025 puzzle #697.
| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | COMMIT TO PAPER | AUTHOR, COMPOSE, PEN, WRITE |
| Green | NEEDS FOR PLAYING YAHTZEE | CUP, DICE, PENCIL, SCORECARD |
| Blue | HEROES OF ACTION MOVIE FRANCHISES | BOND, JONES, OCEAN, WICK |
| Purple | ___STICK | CANDLE, CHOP, JOY, YARD |
Why the groups fit
Yellow: COMMIT TO PAPER
AUTHOR, COMPOSE, PEN, and WRITE are all associated with putting words on paper. Some are actions and some can be used as nouns or verbs, which makes the overlap less obvious when the words are mixed with other plausible groupings.

#1 Best Overall
Green: NEEDS FOR PLAYING YAHTZEE
A cup, dice, pencil, and scorecard are the listed items needed for a game of Yahtzee.
Blue: HEROES OF ACTION MOVIE FRANCHISES
The names refer to James Bond, Indiana Jones, Danny Ocean, and John Wick. The link is the character and franchise association; Danny Ocean may be less immediately recognizable as an action-franchise hero than the other three.
Rank #2
Purple: ___STICK
Each word makes a familiar compound when followed by “stick”: candle stick, chopstick, joystick, and yardstick.
Why the date and number need a year
The answer set above is the one reported by TechRadar and Try Hard Guides for May 8, 2025, puzzle #697. A Position Is Everything page matching the title wording has a different answer list, and another newer result also pairs May 8, 2026 with #697 but gives a different grid. Those conflicts make the year essential: the corroborated historical solution is for May 8, 2025, not a verified May 8, 2026 puzzle.
Rank #3
Connections is described in secondary coverage as a grid of 16 words sorted into four groups of four, with players able to make up to four mistakes. TechRadar describes a new puzzle becoming available at midnight in each time zone, so “May 8” can refer to different local release windows. The date and number alone are not enough to identify an answer set if a page has mismatched its year or content.
