| SAND ___ | CASTLE, PAPER, PIPER, STONE | Each completes a familiar phrase: sandcastle, sandpaper, sandpiper, or sandstone. |
All 16 words in the puzzle
FLAT, STONE, PETER, PIPER, MARY JANE, WATER, SLIDE, WEED, PAPER, TAPER, PLANT, CASTLE, FADE, PRUNE, MULE, DWINDLE.
A useful way to spot the groups
The garden verbs make a clear starting group: PLANT, PRUNE, WATER, and WEED. The shoe styles form another: FLAT, MARY JANE, MULE, and SLIDE.
For the remaining eight words, distinguish PETER from PIPER. PETER belongs with DWINDLE, FADE, and TAPER as a word meaning to diminish or decline. PIPER instead joins CASTLE, PAPER, and STONE to complete phrases beginning with “sand.”
