Frost Mage is a ranged damage class built around ice attacks and crowd control. Choose Icicle for a build-and-spend resource loop, or Frostbeam for sustained channels that grow stronger the longer they continue. For Frostbeam, the practical fight plan is to group enemies and recover Ice Energy with Maelstrom, align cooldowns, then channel Frostbeam alongside Tidepool when available.
What Frost Mage does
The class uses a Frost Staff to deal ice damage from range and control enemies. Its official class spotlight sums up the fantasy as: “Freeze any foe in your way and shatter them with icy power!” (BP Events class spotlight.)
Frost Mage has two distinct specializations, not two names for the same rotation. The choice changes how you build damage and how you execute it.
Choose between Icicle and Frostbeam
| Specialization | Core pattern | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Icicle | Build Endless Cold, then spend it during a burst sequence. | Its build-and-spend sequence can be punishing if the burst is mistimed or executed incorrectly. |
| Frostbeam | Channel Frostbeam for longer stretches so its damage grows as the cast continues. | Execution is more channel-driven, with strong AoE and control, but channeling slows movement and damage is concentrated into burst windows. |
These are guide-described play patterns, not independently measured performance rankings. Choose Frostbeam if you prefer a simpler channel-based pattern and area control, and can plan around reduced movement. Choose Icicle if you want to manage a resource build-up and spend it in a timed burst.

How to play Frostbeam
Think of Frostbeam as a resource-and-cooldown loop rather than a beam to hold continuously. The goal is to prepare a burst window, channel during its strongest part, and avoid wasting Ice Energy when supporting effects are unavailable.
- Group enemies and recover Ice Energy with Maelstrom. It pulls enemies together and is described as a main Ice Energy generator, making it especially useful before longer Frostbeam casts in area fights.
- Use Permafrost to prepare the window. The specialist guide describes it as a 10-second cooldown effect that grants haste and recovers 6 Ice Energy per second. Where practical, align it with Glacier Hymn and other damage multipliers.
- Channel Frostbeam with Tidepool when the relevant talent is available. The talent allows the two channeled abilities to operate together; Tidepool is also an important source of AoE damage.
- Manage energy between cooldown windows. When cooldowns are unavailable or Ice Energy is low, stop and restart Frostbeam casts to conserve energy rather than assuming uninterrupted channeling is always best.
- Position before committing to a channel. Frostbeam limits mobility while channeling. Move out of danger or use a defensive flex option when an encounter mechanic makes survival more important than the damage or control alternative.
Putting the burst together
Stack cooldowns and damage multipliers, then channel Frostbeam together with Tidepool until the burst effects expire. Maelstrom helps set up grouped targets and resource recovery; Permafrost supports the window with haste and Ice Energy. The exact timing and available options depend on your talents and current character setup.

Stats, gear, and patch-sensitive details
The specialist Frostbeam guide lists Crit Rate, Haste, Luck, Mastery, and Versatility as stat priorities. It specifically explains that Haste adds ticks to Frostbeam and Tidepool. Treat this as that guide’s recommendation rather than a universal stat order: equipment, progression, and balance changes can alter what is valuable.
The same guide separates recommendations by progression context. One high-level setup assumes Level 140/150 set gear and a Level 150 Relic Weapon; its Season 1 gear discussion assumes level 80 gear and a level 90 weapon. Those assumptions matter when interpreting its build advice and are not general thresholds every Frost Mage should pursue.
