Why the words belong together
Fitting: FAIR, JUST, PROPER, RIGHT
These words can all mean suitable or appropriate. FAIR, JUST, and RIGHT may suggest moral judgment in other contexts, but PROPER points to the shared sense of being fitting.
Achieve victory over: BEAT, BEST, TAKE, WORST
Read each as a verb meaning to defeat or prevail over an opponent: you can beat, best, take, or worst someone. BEST and WORST may look like opposites, but here they belong together because of their verb senses.

Parts of an electric guitar: FRET, PEG, PICKUP, STRING
A fret is set into the guitar neck, a tuning peg adjusts string tension, a pickup turns string vibration into an electrical signal, and strings are the instrument’s vibrating elements.
Phonetic elements of speech: INTONATION, LOUDNESS, RHYTHM, STRESS
These describe features of spoken sound, including pitch movement, volume, timing, and emphasis. RHYTHM is easy to associate with music, but in this group it refers to timing in speech.
Rank #2
Tricky clues to watch for
- RHYTHM: The guitar category is tempting, but RHYTHM fits with speech features rather than the instrument parts.
- BEST and WORST: Their opposite-looking meanings can distract from the verb sense both share with BEAT and TAKE.
- FAIR, JUST, and RIGHT: Their moral meanings are less useful here than the shared idea of being suitable, signaled by PROPER.
Puzzle number and date
AllThings.how and WordsRated both identify the November 28, 2025 game as puzzle #901 and list the same four groups. A YourDictionary archive result associates that date with #902 while showing the same groups, so the archive numbering is inconsistent. The official NYT archive could not be independently confirmed; #901 is the date-and-number pairing reported by the two agreeing third-party archives.
