How to survive Great Ape Vegeta’s opening attacks
Great Ape Vegeta can open with a special attack, so be ready to defend as the encounter begins. Kristina Ebanez’s Destructoid guide recommends dodging or blocking the opening pressure. For close-range situations, the guide favors blocking, reporting that it reduced damage more reliably than dodging in that context; treat this as the author’s encounter advice, not a universal rule for every attack.

Avoid staying directly in front of Vegeta when closing in. The same guide warns about his frontal grab pressure and recommends approaching from another angle rather than walking into it.
Build Ki and Skill Count without giving up a safe opening
Your objective is to reach Sparking mode by charging Ki and accruing Skill Count. Charging in the open while Vegeta is free to attack can leave you exposed, so use moments when he is knocked down or when the rocky terrain gives you cover. Ebanez’s guide specifically recommends using knockback, down time, or terrain to make room to charge.

For general movement, Bandai Namco’s combat mechanics guide describes short dashes as a way to dodge blast attacks and covers guarding, counters, and evasion. These are general combat tools, not confirmed counters for any particular Great Ape Vegeta move.
Use Solar Flare followed by Kamehameha in Sparking mode
- Build enough Ki and Skill Count to enter Sparking mode, using a knockdown or terrain to create a charging window.
- When you have an opening, activate Solar Flare.
- Follow it shortly afterward with Kamehameha rather than relying on Solar Flare alone.
Ebanez recommends this sequence and says Solar Flare by itself does little. The guide also reports repeatedly knocking Vegeta down with Kamehameha when the blast is timed as he rises. That is the guide author’s reported result, not a guaranteed outcome for every attempt.

Why this fight feels different from a normal opponent
This is an early encounter in Goku’s Episode Battle during the Saiyan Arc. IGN’s October 10, 2024 video-guide description also frames the fight as a difficult early battle that calls for a different approach from a normal foe. The description supports that narrow framing; it does not establish additional move-specific tactics.
