During Pokémon GO’s World of Wonders: Taken Over event, the way to encounter Shadow Groudon was to complete the event’s Special Research, use the Super Rocket Radar it awarded to find Giovanni, and defeat him. The event and its research claim window have both ended, so this is a historical guide—not a currently available route.
How the Shadow Groudon encounter worked
- Progress through the World of Wonders: Taken Over Special Research. Niantic said the story would award a Super Rocket Radar. The event announcement does not publish a full page-by-page task list, so there is no official checklist to reproduce. Niantic’s event announcement described the route as: “Progress through it to receive a Super Rocket Radar and chase down Giovanni!”
- Equip and use the Super Rocket Radar. It points to possible Giovanni locations, but some marked locations may be decoy Grunts disguised as Giovanni. Check the locations until you find Giovanni’s actual Hideout. Niantic’s Help Center explains how the radar works.
- Defeat Giovanni. Shadow Groudon was the target encounter identified for Giovanni during this event.
Research eligibility and deadlines
Niantic’s Help Center says Giovanni Special Research is assigned only to Trainers who have completed “A Troubling Situation.” Its general research flow can also involve Team GO Rocket Grunts, Leaders, and other objectives.

- Event: March 27–31, 2024, ending at 11:59 p.m. local time on March 31.
- Special Research claim deadline: June 1, 2024, at 9:59 a.m. local time.
Both dates have passed. The event announcement also noted more frequent Team GO Rocket appearances at PokéStops and in balloons, and that Charged TMs could remove Frustration from Shadow Pokémon during the event.
Shadow Groudon was not part of the Shadow Mewtwo Raids
Shadow Mewtwo appeared in five-star Shadow Raids on March 30–31, 2024. That was a separate event feature; the announced route to Shadow Groudon was through Giovanni, not those raids.

Were the event’s paid offers required?
No. Niantic listed optional, time-limited digital offers, but did not identify them as a requirement for the Shadow Groudon encounter. A US$2 Timed Research offer included six Mysterious Components, one Super Incubator, one regular Rocket Radar, and a Pawniard encounter; it had to be completed and claimed by March 31, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. local time. A separate US$9.99 web-store Team GO Rocket bundle and an in-game bundle for 315 PokéCoins were also listed. These were event offers, not the Special Research route, and should not be taken as available now.
