This is the October 10, 2024 NYT Connections puzzle, #487—not a different October 10 edition from another year. If you want to solve it yourself, start with the hint ladder below; the full categories and all 16 answers follow.

Hints for Connections #487

Use these in order to avoid seeing more than you need:

  1. One group consists of familiar parts of the body.
  2. Look for approving slang associated with the 1980s.
  3. Four entries are one-word movie titles.
  4. The last group draws on an English musical lyric.

Why these words fit

BODY PARTS: ARM, EYE, HIP, LEG

These are four familiar anatomical terms. HIP is the tempting overlap: it can also mean fashionable or cool, so it may appear to belong with the slang words. In this puzzle’s intended solution, HIP stays with the body parts.

COOL, IN ’80S SLANG: BAD, FLY, ILL, RAD

Each word can be used approvingly to mean cool, stylish, or excellent. The label describes the puzzle’s cultural framing; it does not mean all four terms originated in the 1980s.

MOVIES: BIG, ELF, HER, SAW

Each entry is also a one-word film title. Their ordinary meanings can distract from the fact that the words work as titles.

WORDS IN “DO-RE-MI”: DOE, FAR, SEW, TEA

These are English mnemonic words in the lyric sequence from “Do-Re-Mi.” They are not the standard spellings of the solfège syllables: the wordplay points to DOE, FAR, SEW, and TEA.

How Connections works

The NYT Help Center describes Connections as a word game in which players find themes among 16 words and sort them into four groups of four. Each group has a color; yellow is described as easiest and purple as trickiest. The game has one solution, and overlapping possible categories make the choices challenging.

The daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone. It is available on the NYT Games website and apps listed in the Help Center. The Center says archived puzzles date back to June 12, 2023, with archive access available to All Access and Games subscribers. Access terms can change, so check the current NYT Games information if you want to replay this historical puzzle.
