To play Terraria in local co-op on one Xbox, connect a second compatible controller, start or load a world with the first player, then use the join prompt shown for the second controller. Terraria supports local co-op and shared/split-screen on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
What you need for Terraria local co-op
- Terraria installed on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
- A second compatible Xbox controller, connected and turned on.
- A second player profile and Terraria character if the game prompts you to select them.
The Xbox store lists Terraria as supporting “Xbox local co-op (2-8)” and “Shared/split screen.” The listing does not specify that all eight players can join a single-console session, so do not assume that the listed maximum applies to one Xbox.

How to start split-screen on one Xbox
- Connect and turn on the second controller.
- Have the first player launch Terraria and load an existing world or create a new one.
- Once the world is active, check the screen for the join prompt and use it from the second controller.
- Select the second player’s console profile and Terraria character if prompted. Create a character if needed.
The exact Xbox button prompt and any Xbox-specific profile or guest-account requirements are not established by the available official setup information. Follow the prompt displayed in your game rather than relying on instructions for another console.
If the second player does not join
Return to the Xbox dashboard and check that each controller is assigned to the intended profile. Then reopen the world and try the join prompt again. This is a practical troubleshooting step, not a documented Terraria-specific support procedure.

For version context, 505 Games’ Terraria 1.4.5.8 Hotfix Patch 5 change log includes split-screen visual fixes and an Xbox crash fix. Those notes describe that version’s changes; they do not guarantee that every current issue is resolved.

Local co-op means players share one Xbox and use separate controllers for the same couch session. The Xbox listing treats online console multiplayer separately and says it requires Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate, sold separately. It does not state that a subscription is required for local co-op on one console.
