What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Fortnite loading freezes do not all have the same cause, so start by identifying your platform and the exact screen or error. Check Epic’s live status and known-issue channels first; then use the troubleshooting path for Xbox, PlayStation, or PC below. If you see an error code, search for that exact code in the Epic Games Help Center.
First, identify the screen and check for an outage
- Note your platform: Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or PC.
- Note what is stuck: a general loading screen, PlayStation’s “Checking for Updates” screen, or a specific error message. Different screens can require different fixes.
- Check Epic’s public status page and its Community Issues page for an outage or known issue. If Epic reports a service problem, wait for it to be resolved before changing local network or console settings.
- Check for updates to Fortnite and your console or PC platform software, as applicable.
Xbox: Fortnite stuck on the loading screen
Epic’s Xbox-specific guidance starts with the network connection, then moves to console troubleshooting:
- Restart your modem or router. Turn it off, wait briefly, and turn it back on. Once the connection is restored, try Fortnite again.
- Try Epic’s basic console troubleshooting. Its console troubleshooting guide includes clearing the Xbox cache and reinstalling Fortnite. Follow the current instructions for your Xbox model; menu labels and steps can vary across software versions.
- Clear the Xbox MAC address and restart the console using Microsoft’s current network instructions.
Epic’s dedicated article for this symptom is “Stuck on loading screen while playing Fortnite on Xbox.” If its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, Epic’s console guidance recommends contacting the platform manufacturer.
PlayStation: stuck at “Checking for Updates”
Epic says this screen can result from communication problems with its servers. Check the status page first, then try its network-focused steps. Change network settings only if you are comfortable doing so, and record your existing settings so you can restore them if needed.

- Close Fortnite and restore licenses using the instructions for your PlayStation model in Epic’s PlayStation “Checking for Updates” guide.
- Review the console’s communication settings as described in that guide. Epic specifies automatic IP settings, DHCP host name “Do Not Use,” manual DNS entries 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, and MTU 1500. These are troubleshooting settings, not a requirement for every player or network.
- Restart the console and try Fortnite again. Epic also recommends a wired LAN connection when possible; it is an optional connection test, not a guaranteed fix.
PC: freezing, black screens, or graphics-related problems
Epic’s PC graphics steps are aimed at freezes and graphics symptoms, not every loading-screen hang. Use the checks that match what your PC is doing.
Start with requirements, settings, and drivers
- Confirm the PC meets Fortnite’s minimum system requirements.
- Set Quality Presets to Low and 3D Resolution to 100%, then test the game.
- Update your graphics driver using the instructions for your graphics hardware.
- If the PC has both integrated and dedicated graphics, set Fortnite to use the high-performance GPU.
If DirectX 12 causes a freeze or black screen
For DirectX 12 crashes, freezes, or black screens, Epic says switching to Performance Mode may help. Its PC graphics troubleshooting guide also lists the launcher arguments -d3d12 -es31. These options address specific graphics symptoms; they are not general fixes for every startup problem.

- If changes to settings will not stick, remove the read-only property from
GameUserSettings.ini, as described in Epic’s PC graphics guide. - If Fortnite freezes or crashes in fullscreen, check the NVIDIA fullscreen scaling settings using Epic’s instructions.
- If problems begin after extended play, check that the PC has adequate airflow.
If these steps do not resolve a PC graphics problem, Epic recommends submitting a support ticket through its Help Center.
