For the September 11, 2025, New York Times Connections puzzle, game #823, the four groups are BLEMISH, BEHEMOTH, RUDE THINGS TO DO, and ON A BASEBALL FIELD. If you’re still solving, start with the hints below; the full word groups follow a clear spoiler warning.

Hints for Connections #823

Connections asks you to sort sixteen words into four groups of four. The categories use yellow, green, blue, and purple, with the puzzle generally becoming more difficult across that sequence. A plausible connection can still be a red herring.

  • Yellow — Flaws: Think of marks or damage that mar an object.
  • Green — Large entity: Look for words associated with something enormous.
  • Blue — Bad manners: Consider actions that can be discourteous.
  • Purple — As seen at Fenway Park: Think of features on a baseball field.

The board contains BOX, POINT, WHOPPER, SCRATCH, SNICKER, PLATE, MOUND, WHALE, MAR, STARE, MAMMOTH, DING, BASE, COLOSSUS, DENT, and WHISPER.

How to spot the tricky connection

MOUND, MAR, SNICKER, and WHOPPER may suggest candy names if you imagine each without its last letter. That is the tempting false lead. Instead, place WHOPPER with COLOSSUS, MAMMOTH, and WHALE: each can mean or evoke something very large. With that group identified, the blemish, discourteous-action, and baseball-field categories become easier to see.
