Witchcraft Powers were seasonal abilities in Diablo 4’s Season of Witchcraft (Season 7). They augmented or empowered a character’s existing skills rather than replacing the character’s build. Blizzard described them as “your gateway to wonderful new abilities, augmenting and empowering your existing skills.” Read Blizzard Entertainment’s Season of Witchcraft overview.
The season began January 21, 2025. It is historical, not a currently active season: Blizzard announced Season 8, Belial’s Return, for April 29, 2025. The guide confirms that the revised Tree of Whispers layout would remain beyond the season, but does not confirm that Witchcraft Powers did. Treat their present-day availability as unverified unless a current official source or the game itself confirms it.

How Witchcraft Powers worked
Season 7 added a separate progression track in which players earned Coven Favor and Restless Rot through seasonal activities. Coven Favor advanced reputation with the Coven; reputation tiers opened access to powers at Coven Altars beneath the Tree of Whispers. Restless Rot was a material used to upgrade powers, and could be spent from the inventory.
The system was designed to work alongside a character’s existing skills. Choosing a power therefore meant considering what role it served and how it fit the build—not simply selecting the school with the most appealing name. Blizzard’s school descriptions do not establish one school as the best choice for every class or build.

What were the Witchcraft Power schools?
Eldritch
Eldritch powers centered on destructive energies, making the school the natural place to look for offensive effects.
Psyche
Psyche powers dealt with defensive mind-and-spirit effects, visions and focus, as well as inducing madness in enemies. Their broad role encompassed protection and control.

- LORD OF HATRED EXPANSION — Includes Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred Standard Edition and Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred. The Diablo IV base game is required to play.
- IN-GAME EXTRAS — Get 1 Extra Stash Tab, 2 Additional Character Slots, and 3 Decor Items in World of Warcraft.
- NEW CLASSES AND REGION — Master two new classes and explore the ancient region of Skovos in the Lord of Hatred expansion.
- ACTION RPG ADVENTURE — Slay demons, master abilities, explore nightmarish dungeons, and find legendary loot in a dark open world.
- NEW CAMPAIGN AGAINST MEPHISTO — Make your stand against the Prime Evil Mephisto in a rich new story featuring new enemies, regions, and narrative twists.
Growth & Decay
Growth & Decay powers used living magic to heal or harm and could affect Life and Resource. Consider them when your build benefits from those kinds of effects.
Lost powers
Lost powers were rare abilities outside the three main schools. They were discovered at elusive Forgotten Altars in dungeons, so finding them followed a separate exploration path rather than the ordinary school groupings.

How to unlock and upgrade powers
- Advance the Coven’s seasonal progression. Complete Whisper bounties and defeat Headrotten to earn Coven Favor or seasonal reputation and Restless Rot.
- Reach reputation tiers. As your standing with the Coven rises, new powers become available at Coven Altars beneath the Tree of Whispers.
- Upgrade powers with Restless Rot. Spend the material from your inventory. The guide notes that higher-difficulty Headrotten dropped more Rot.
- Search dungeons for Lost powers. Look for Forgotten Altars to discover these rare powers outside the three main schools.
If you owned Vessel of Hatred, Blizzard’s guide specified an additional start requirement: first complete the expansion campaign prologue, then speak to Witch Gelena in Gea Kul to begin the questline.
Where Headhunts and Rootholds fit in
Headhunts
Headhunts were seasonal areas where Whisper bounties could reveal Exposed Roots and sometimes an Uprooted Cocoon. Cocoons spawned Headrotten bosses, tying these encounters to the Favor and Restless Rot progression loop. A rare Fugitive Head encounter could yield a Head to return to the Coven.

Rootholds
Rootholds were seasonal micro-dungeons with bonus challenges and rewards. Players entered them using Whisper Wood sigils obtained from Whisper Caches and Silent Chests. Along with Headhunts, they supplied activities and materials connected to progressing through the Coven.

Best Value
- For damage: consider Eldritch’s destructive focus and whether its effects complement your damage skills.
- For defense or control: look at Psyche’s defensive effects and its ability to affect enemies.
- For healing or resource effects: consider Growth & Decay, which could affect Life and Resource.
- For discovery: explore dungeons for Forgotten Altars if you are seeking Lost powers.
- For progression: weigh the power you want against the reputation tier and Restless Rot needed to access or upgrade it.
These are role-based ways to compare powers, not claims that a school or ability is optimal for a particular class. Blizzard’s 2.1 patch notes include power adjustments and fixes, so launch descriptions and balance values may not reflect later tuning. The patch notes do not provide one definitive consolidated final table of every power; any numerical value should be tied to the specific dated patch in which it applies. See Blizzard’s Diablo IV patch notes.
Are Witchcraft Powers still available?
Season of Witchcraft began January 21, 2025, and Blizzard announced Season 8, Belial’s Return, beginning April 29, 2025. That makes Witchcraft Powers a feature of a past season. Blizzard’s Witchcraft guide says the revised Tree of Whispers layout would remain after the season, but that statement does not establish that the powers themselves remained available. Check current in-game information or a current official Blizzard announcement before assuming you can unlock or use them now. Read Blizzard’s Season 8 announcement.
