In the 2024 rules, Weapon Mastery lets a character use the mastery property associated with selected weapon kinds. Owning or wielding a weapon is not enough: you need a feature that grants mastery access, and that feature determines which weapons you can select and how many. The rules below cover the revised 2024 fifth-edition game, which D&D Beyond labels “5.5e” as of its March 2, 2026 editor note; that label change does not change the rules.
How to use Weapon Mastery
- Check your feature. At level 1, Barbarians, Fighters, Paladins, Rangers, and Rogues gain Weapon Mastery. Read your class feature to see which weapon kinds qualify and how many you may select.
- Select weapon kinds. Each weapon in the equipment table has one mastery property. Choose eligible weapon kinds, not a new property for each attack.
- Apply the property when its trigger occurs. The property might trigger on a hit, a miss, or a Light weapon’s extra attack. Follow its own limits and conditions.
- Change selections after a Long Rest when your class feature allows it. The class rules differ on how many choices you may replace.
The general mastery rules state no short-rest or long-rest use limit for the properties themselves. Individual triggers and limits still apply. Fighter’s level-9 Tactical Master feature is a specific exception to the usual fixed property: for an attack with a weapon whose mastery property the Fighter can use, it permits using Push, Sap, or Slow instead for that attack.
For exact wording, see D&D Beyond’s 2024 Basic Rules: Mastery Properties. The official guide Your Guide to Weapon Mastery in the 2024 Player’s Handbook offers additional orientation and examples.
Which classes get it, and how many weapons can they master?
These are the baseline class-feature selections. A subclass may grant additional access; use that subclass feature’s wording rather than assuming it changes the baseline rules.

What each mastery property does
These concise explanations summarize the 2024 Basic Rules. The specific weapon’s entry determines which property it has.
Cleave
After hitting with a melee attack roll, make one additional melee attack roll against a second creature within 5 feet of the first and within your reach. On a hit, the second creature takes the weapon’s damage, but you do not add your ability modifier unless it is negative. You can use Cleave only once per turn.

Push
On a hit, push a Large or smaller creature up to 10 feet straight away from you.

Slow
If your hit deals damage, reduce the target’s Speed by 10 feet until the start of your next turn. Slow effects from multiple weapons with this property do not stack beyond a 10-foot reduction.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose a mastery for your character
Compare properties by their trigger, target requirements, tactical result, and action-economy effect. The best option depends on the weapon kinds your class permits and how you expect to use them.
- Trigger: Cleave, Push, Sap, Slow, Topple, and Vex trigger on a hit (some require the hit to deal damage); Graze triggers on a miss; Nick modifies the Light property’s extra attack.
- Target constraints: Cleave needs a second creature within 5 feet of the first and within your reach. Push works only on Large or smaller creatures. Topple calls for a saving throw.
- Control effect: Push repositions a target, Topple can knock it Prone, Slow reduces Speed, and Sap impairs the target’s next attack roll.
- Limits: Cleave and Nick each work once per turn. Multiple Slow effects do not increase the reduction beyond 10 feet.
Proficiency, Light, and other common questions
Does weapon proficiency grant mastery?
No. Proficiency determines whether you add your Proficiency Bonus to an attack roll. Weapon Mastery is separate: you need a feature that grants it, and the weapon must meet that feature’s eligibility rules.

Does Nick give you another attack?
No. The Light property grants the extra attack; Nick lets you make that one attack as part of the Attack action rather than as a Bonus Action.
Can I choose a different mastery property for every attack?
Normally, no. You select eligible weapon kinds through your class feature, and each weapon has one property in the table. Tactical Master is the level-9 Fighter exception: it lets you substitute Push, Sap, or Slow for that attack.
Is Weapon Mastery a playtest rule?
The feature appears in the final 2024 rules. Use the final Basic Rules text rather than Unearthed Arcana playtest versions, which changed during development. The free D&D Beyond Basic Rules include the core Weapon Mastery rules; the 2024 Player’s Handbook is an optional fuller reference, not a prerequisite.
