VALORANT’s visible rank is your position on the Competitive ladder; Rank Rating (RR) is the progress measure that moves you toward another rank. Riot also uses a separate, less-public Match Making Rating (MMR) in its RR calculations, so a match’s result matters, but a fixed win-to-RR formula cannot be assumed. The ladder and its rules have changed over time, and Patch 13.06 added new performance and career features without describing them as replacements for RR.
What are rank, RR and MMR?
These terms describe related but different parts of progression:
- Rank is the visible category on the Competitive ladder.
- RR is the visible progress measure associated with advancing or dropping through ranks.
- MMR is an underlying rating Riot discusses separately from displayed rank and says affects RR calculation. Riot does not publish a complete current formula players can use to predict a match’s RR change.
Riot’s original rank and matchmaking explainer, published April 24, 2020, established the basic ladder concepts. A later Episode 2 Competitive update, published January 12, 2021, described RR as being influenced mostly by match wins and losses and gave specific values and rules for that version of the system. Those old figures—including win and loss ranges, draw rules, and demotion protection—are historical, not reliable current values.
Riot has continued to tune the relationship between RR and MMR. In Patch 13.00, published June 23, 2026, Riot said it was adjusting RR calculations after MMR changes had time to settle, with the aim of helping consistent winners feel less stuck. In Patch 12.05, published in March 2026, Riot changed high-rank RR thresholds to align regional leaderboard requirements while saying the underlying MMR systems were unchanged. This is why older guides or another player’s reported point change may not predict your own result.

What ranks are on the VALORANT ladder?
Riot’s foundational explainer names Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Immortal, and VALORANT. It describes three tiers within each rank except VALORANT. Treat that as the ladder’s historical baseline, rather than a guarantee that every tier display or high-rank rule remains identical in October 2026. For the current presentation, check the Competitive screen in the client.
High-rank thresholds can also depend on region and patch. The Patch 12.05 change is a dated example, not a complete current threshold table: Riot did not publish all regional requirements in the source notes summarized here, and the adjustment did not change MMR.

How do you rank up, and why can RR gains vary?
Winning matches is central to progression, but displayed rank and RR are not a simple public points-per-win chart. Riot describes match outcome as a major influence and MMR as another factor in RR calculation, while its public notes show that calculation is tuned over time. A win therefore does not guarantee a particular RR gain, and a loss does not have one universal published cost.
Riot’s Patch 13.06 update introduced a separate Performance Score, measured on a 0–500 scale. Riot says it reflects more than damage and kills and is used for MVP and scoreboard ordering in Competitive, Unrated, Swiftplay, and Premier. The notes also introduce Accolades for standout performances. They do not say that Performance Score directly changes RR or determines rank, so it should not be treated as a substitute for the rank progression system.

What happens to rank after a reset?
Placement and reset rules are patch-specific. In Patch 11.00, published June 24, 2025, Riot said players might experience a smaller rank drop after completing placements for that midseason reset and raised the maximum placement result from Ascendant 1 to Ascendant 3. That is an example of how reset treatment changed, not confirmation of the live October 2026 placement cap or number of placement matches.
For the current placement requirement and cap, use the Competitive screen in the game client and the patch notes for the active season. The available official notes do not establish the exact October 2026 placement count or cap.

- Accolades: recognition for standout performance.
- Rank Legacy: counters showing how many times you have reached each rank across your Competitive career.

What can you reliably check in October 2026?
The client is the practical reference for your current rank, RR, Competitive Hub details, and live placement information. Patch notes are the better reference for changes to rules and thresholds. Riot’s published material cited here does not establish an exact current RR formula, universal gain/loss bands, a full regional high-rank threshold table, or the current placement count and cap. Avoid treating 2021 RR examples or a 2025 placement cap as current rules.
