To install a WoW addon, first choose the version of World of Warcraft you play, then install the addon with a manager such as CurseForge or place its extracted folder in that version’s Interface/AddOns directory. Retail, Classic Era, and other WoW versions can use different game folders, so selecting the right client is essential.
Choose the WoW version you play
World of Warcraft has several active versions and modes, including Modern WoW, Classic Era, Season of Discovery, Anniversary Classic, and Mists of Pandaria Classic. Check Blizzard’s current WoW modes page and select the client you actually use before installing addons. Addons installed for one version may not appear in another.
Addon managers also ask you to select a game flavor. In CurseForge, choose the intended WoW version in the game dropdown before browsing or installing an addon.
Install an addon with a manager
CurseForge
- Install and open the CurseForge app. Its guide lists Windows 10 and 11, macOS 12 or later, and Linux with official Ubuntu distributions as supported platforms; check the current app guide for updated platform information.
- Let the app detect your WoW installation. If it does not find the right one, use its scan or manual-add options and point it to the game directory for the version you play.
- Open WoW in CurseForge, select the correct game flavor, and use Browse or search to find the addon you want.
- Choose the addon and install it. Use the manager’s update controls later to update addons when needed.
CurseForge’s FAQ includes example installation roots such as C:Program Files (x86)World of Warcraft_retail_ on Windows and /Applications/World of Warcraft/_retail_/ on macOS. WowUp
WowUp is another addon manager. Its documented sources include WowUpHub, CurseForge, and TukUI, among other pathways; availability can vary by addon and source. For addons hosted on GitHub, WowUp installation requires an author-created tagged release. See the WowUp guide for its source and installation details.
Install an addon manually
- Download the addon archive from its author or hosting site.
- Extract the archive. The addon’s folder or folders—not the compressed archive—need to go into the game’s addon directory.
- Open the folder for the WoW version you play, then place the extracted addon folder in
Interface/AddOns. - Launch that same WoW version and check the character-select screen’s AddOns button to see whether the addon is listed.
Retail and Classic installations have separate paths. WoWInterface documents examples for each, but your exact location depends on where you installed the game and which version you use: WoWInterface addon installation FAQ.

If an addon does not appear
- Check the version: Make sure you installed the addon for the WoW flavor you are launching.
- Check the game folder: Confirm the extracted files are under that version’s
Interface/AddOnsdirectory, not another WoW installation. - Check the manager’s target: If you used an app, verify it is pointed at the active game instance and the intended flavor.
- Check the folder structure: Open
AddOnsand confirm the addon’s files are inside the extracted addon folder rather than buried in an extra nested folder.
If the addon appears but does not work, make sure it is up to date. Blizzard recommends updating addons and disabling them during troubleshooting; it notes that “Lag and disconnections are often caused by outdated or broken addons.” This is troubleshooting guidance, not proof that an addon caused any specific connection or performance problem. Save your addons and settings
CurseForge documents two ways to preserve addons and their settings: create a Sync Profile in the app, or back up the game’s AddOns and WTF folders. AddOns holds addon files; WTF contains saved configuration and settings. Keep a copy somewhere separate from the game installation so it remains available if you reinstall or move WoW. Manager or manual installation?

Neither method is established as universally better. The key is matching the addon and its destination folder to the WoW version you launch.
