To enable Minecraft multiplayer, first make sure everyone is using the same edition—Java or Bedrock—then choose LAN or online play. For a Bedrock LAN world, edit the world and turn on Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players. For Java LAN, open the pause menu and select Open to LAN. Online play uses the edition’s Friends, Servers or Realms options, and may also depend on account permissions or a console subscription.

Before you start: check edition and version

Java and Bedrock players generally cannot join each other’s ordinary worlds, servers or Realms. Everyone needs to use the compatible edition and a matching, current game version. If a friend’s world does not appear or a server rejects the connection, updating both games is a sensible first check. Minecraft Help explains the edition differences, and Minecraft’s server guide covers joining servers.

Choose how you want to play

Option Where players are How joining works
Bedrock LAN On the same local network The host enables multiplayer and LAN visibility; the joiner selects the world from Play > Worlds.
Java LAN On the same local network The host opens the world to LAN; other players on the network join it.
Bedrock friend world Online, not necessarily on the same network The host starts the world; the friend joins through Play > Friends.
Server or Realm Online Use the edition’s server or Realms route; a Realm is hosted, so guests can join without its owner being online.

LAN requires a shared local network. Online friend-world play, servers and Realms use a different connection route. Pick based on where players are, which edition they use, and whether you want a friend’s active world or a hosted option. Minecraft’s server guide describes the online options.

Enable Bedrock multiplayer on a LAN

These steps apply to Bedrock devices that support LAN play. Players need to be on the same network and use a compatible current version. Minecraft Help’s instructions are to enable both multiplayer and LAN visibility in the world settings.

  1. On the host device, open Minecraft and choose Play.
  2. Find the world, select its edit control, and open the Multiplayer settings.
  3. Turn on Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players.
  4. Start the world. On the other device, go to Play > Worlds and select the LAN-marked world.

If the world is not listed, verify that both devices are on the same local network, the host has started the world, and both games are compatible and up to date. Minecraft Help: Bedrock Edition LAN instructions.

Open a Java world to LAN

  1. Load or create the world on the host computer.
  2. Open the pause menu and select Open to LAN.
  3. Set the available options, then choose Start LAN World.
  4. Other players on the same network can join through the multiplayer menu.

Java’s Open to LAN option is for players on the local network; it is not the same as inviting an online friend to a Bedrock world. For internet play, use a compatible server or Realm. Minecraft’s multiplayer and server guide.

Play online with a Bedrock friend

  1. The host starts the world and makes sure multiplayer is allowed in its settings.
  2. Both players sign in as required and add each other as Minecraft friends.
  3. The joining player opens Play > Friends.
  4. Under Joinable Friends, select the host’s world.

A friend-hosted world is available while its host is online. If you want guests to be able to play while the owner is offline, use a Realm instead. Minecraft Help’s multiplayer guidance.

Join a server or Realm

For Bedrock, open Play and use the Servers or Friends tab, depending on whether you are joining a server or a friend-hosted option. For Java, choose Multiplayer from the main menu to connect to a server. Match the game edition and version to the destination. Realms provide hosted worlds; unlike a friend’s active world, the owner does not need to be online for guests to join. Consult Minecraft’s server guide for the server route.
