To romance Gennojo, play as Naoe and complete his quest chain after the Fool story arc, choosing the romance dialogue options along the way. To recruit him into the League, make a separate timed choice—“soothe Gennojo”—during The Godless Harvest. Romance does not automatically recruit him.
Unlock Gennojo’s questline
Complete the Fool story arc, then play as Naoe and choose “You might be right” in the relevant conversation. That opens Gennojo’s personal quests. Guides use slightly different names for some preceding missions, so follow the Fool arc and the quest markers if a label does not match yours. GameSpot’s route guide and Method’s walkthrough both cover the route.

How to romance Gennojo
Complete the following quests as Naoe and use the listed dialogue options when they appear:
- Sake and Swords: Meet Gennojo near Ogura Pond, southeast of Kyoto, and help him fight the attackers. Before the fight, choose “Depends what you’re offering”; afterward, choose “Show me, thief.”
- Honor Among Thieves: Find the requested scroll at Kubo Sama Old Residence in northern Kyoto. When you hand it over, choose “I’m keeping it then.”
- Stolen Hearts: Go to the meeting point at Kiyomizudera in southeastern Kyoto. If Gennojo is not there, follow the blood trail west to a hut, defeat the soldiers, and free him. Choose “I’m here for you.”
- Follow-up conversation: When Gennojo talks about his past, choose “I’d like to embrace you.” to pursue the romance scene.
Quest markers identify most of the locations; the dialogue choices are the important details to watch for. GameSpot also notes that “I’m keeping it then” matters for later recruitment, but that choice alone does not recruit Gennojo.

How to recruit Gennojo
Continue the story until The Godless Harvest. During a timed prompt in that quest, choose “soothe Gennojo” to add him to the League. Method reports that missing this prompt locks out recruitment, so make the choice before the timer expires. This is a distinct outcome from completing his romance route.

The routes share prerequisites, but choosing the romantic responses is not a substitute for the recruitment prompt. Method reports that Gennojo cannot be recruited in Canon Mode; Ubisoft’s official pages cited here do not document that specific restriction, so treat it as a guide-reported limitation.

If Gennojo does not appear after recruitment
Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.0.6 notes recorded a fix for an issue where Gennojo did not immediately appear in the hideout after recruitment. The notes establish that a fix was made, but do not guarantee that every later version is free of related issues.
