Nioh 3 has two co-op options: Summon Visitor for help in your current play and Expedition for exploring together. Open Co-op at a Shrine to summon or join a Visitor; start an Expedition from the Starting Point. A current guide reports that these options unlock at different story milestones.

Which co-op mode should you use?

Mode Best for Where to start
Summon Visitor Calling another player to help in your current play, or going to help someone else. At a Shrine, open Co-op and choose Summon Visitor or Become a Visitor.
Expedition A shared session exploring open fields with other players. Choose Expedition from the Starting Point.

These are the purposes described by KOEI TECMO’s official manual and Team NINJA’s official game page. The manual says online co-op supports up to three players.

When does each co-op option unlock?

The following story milestones come from a guide for game version v1.04, last updated February 25, 2026. The official manual confirms the co-op menus and modes but does not specify these unlock points.

  • Summon Visitor: Reach the second Shrine in Battle of Hitokoto Slope.
  • Become a Visitor: Defeat Yamagata Masakage.
  • Expedition: Defeat Jakotsu-baba in Hamamatsu and receive the Guiding Mirror.

If a listed option is missing, check your story progress and the current in-game menus; the guide’s milestones may not reflect later changes. The guide is Nioh3.net’s co-op guide.

Visitor or Expedition: rules beyond the basic purpose

The official descriptions distinguish help in a player’s current play from shared open-field exploration. The v1.04 guide also reports differences involving deaths, revives, enemy scaling, and mission credit: it says Visitor sessions end on a death, while Expeditions use an Assist Gauge revive mechanic. These finer rules are guide-reported rather than confirmed in the official manual, so check the mode description in-game before you start if they affect your choice.
