This archived New York Times Strands puzzle is game #148, dated Monday, July 29, 2024. Its theme clue is “Book it!” Start with the hints below, and stop before the spoiler section if you want to solve it yourself.

Hints for Strands #148

Use these clues in order for a gradual nudge rather than an immediate answer reveal:

  1. Theme clue: “Book it!”
  2. Spangram clue: “Palaces of words.”
  3. Spangram path: TechRadar reports that it begins at the top of the fourth column and ends at the bottom of the fourth column.

The theme connects to things people do at a public library: meeting, learning, studying, reading, renewing, borrowing, and browsing.

How to earn an in-game hint

Try finding these words that are not part of the theme: NEWER, PREEN, STRAW, BRAN, DUTY, and COLD. Try Hard Guides explains that three valid non-theme words of four or more letters unlock a hint that highlights a theme word. Its guide is a secondary explanation of the gameplay mechanics; the official NYT rules were not directly available for verification.

Why these words fit

The answers describe activities and services associated with a public library: visitors can meet, learn, study, and read, as well as renew materials, borrow them, or browse the collection. The spangram names the place that ties those words together.
