Unlock Atziri’s Temple by completing six Vaal Beacon encounters in Act Three. More beacon encounters in the Doryani’s Contingency Interlude open access to the Temple in the past. In Endgame, collect Energised Crystals from Vaal Beacons to open and shape the Temple; the area levels where you collect those crystals affect the Temple’s level. Room adjacency can improve rooms, but destabilization means no layout is permanent.
These instructions reflect Path of Exile 2’s 0.5.0 core-game rules, current as of October 8, 2026. Since the game is in Early Access, check the live in-game rules for changes introduced by later patches.

How do you unlock the Vaal Temple?
The Temple is Atziri’s Temple, the Fate of the Vaal mechanic brought into the core game with Path of Exile 2 version 0.5.0. Follow the progression in this order:
- Reach Act Three and complete six Vaal Beacon encounters. This unlocks the Temple in the present.
- Complete further beacon encounters in Doryani’s Contingency Interlude. These allow you to visit the Temple in the past.
- Continue into Endgame. Vaal Beacons can appear in maps and provide crystals used to open and modify the Temple.
GGG’s core-mechanic announcement and the 0.5.0 update notes describe the Act Three and Interlude beacon progression. The Act Three requirement is six encounters; the official material does not specify a separate universal number of additional Interlude encounters for access to the past.

How do you get a higher-level Temple?
Temple level depends on the area level of the locations where you collected the crystals used to open it. To pursue a higher-level Temple, collect those crystals in higher-level maps rather than relying on crystals from lower-level areas. The 0.5.0 notes also describe Temple monster level as factoring in the levels of the areas where the crystals were obtained.
For more targeted beacon access, GGG announced a dedicated Atlas region where every map guarantees a Vaal Beacon encounter, as well as Temple Precursor Tablets that guarantee beacons in maps. The 0.5.0 notes say maps in the city of Lira Vaal always have Energised Crystals and grant points for the Fate of the Vaal Atlas passive tree. Availability and details are patch-sensitive, so check the Atlas and item descriptions in your current game version.
How do you build and upgrade the Temple?
Building is a loop of gathering crystals, spending power to modify the Temple, and arranging rooms before entering. In the original Fate of the Vaal design, afflicted monsters power devices; enough power lets you change the Temple. Completing more beacon encounters provides more energy for adding to it.
Use adjacency to strengthen rooms
Place rooms beside rooms that benefit them to level them up and increase their challenges and rewards. Room placement is therefore a trade-off: consider the adjacency benefit alongside the reward you want and whether the resulting route remains useful. There is no universally optimal arrangement established by the official material; room rolls and player goals differ.
Unlock higher room tiers through Atlas progression
In the core version, rooms can be upgraded as high as Tier 4 after you unlock that ability on the Temple Atlas passive tree. The 0.5.0 update also increased the initial number of Temple rooms, helping players reach Atziri sooner, and added more varieties of reward rooms granted from the console after defeating the Architect.
Plan for destabilization and paths
You cannot preserve every room indefinitely. Required room destabilization is part of the design: when a room must be removed but removing it would disconnect another section, the connected section is converted into simple Path rooms. Accessible Restricted Rooms destabilize when you exit the Temple. This rules out a layout strategy based on keeping a chain of rooms permanently intact.

Once the Temple is arranged, enter it to face its room challenges and pursue the available rewards. Before you start, check your route and consumables against the active restrictions:
- Room-based Medallions cannot be used inside an active Temple.
- Accessible Restricted Rooms destabilize when you leave. Treat access to them as temporary, not as a permanent addition to your layout.
- Some room removals leave Paths behind. A Path preserves connectivity but is not a way to keep the removed room.
- Storage limits apply. The 0.5.0 update raised the cap to 60 Energised Crystals and six Medallions.
Atziri’s Temple is a progression and route-planning mechanic, not a single fixed build or route. The official rules do not identify one character build or room route as best for every set of room rolls. Choose a character and route for your own goals, and use current, version-specific guidance if you need build advice.
