The New York Times Wordle for Thursday, January 23, 2025, is puzzle #1314. Its answer is UPPER. If you want to solve it yourself first, use the hints below before scrolling to the spoiler.

Spoiler-free hints for Wordle #1314

  • The answer has five letters and begins with U.
  • It has two vowels: U and E.
  • One letter appears twice: P.
  • As an adjective, it can describe something situated above another part, or someone at a higher level or position. Parade’s Larry Slawson offers that meaning in its January 23 hint guide.

How the clues help

Wordle gives players six guesses to find a five-letter answer. After each guess, tiles show whether a letter is in the answer and in the correct position, is in the answer but in a different position, or is absent. The Associated Press explains the format in a report republished by Yahoo Tech.

The repeated P is the detail to keep in mind: finding one P does not rule out a second, and feedback on a guess can help establish how many copies the answer contains. Treat duplicate letters as a possibility until the tile feedback resolves them.
